I want to give a little background on this song, so I'm copy-pasting a thing I posted on Facebook:

I'm learning what I can about my background -- many people don't have that chance -- but so much of it was... sanitized. For such a small country, Taiwan's history is brutal, bloody, and filled with oppression.

Also, this song is about Taiwan under Japanese rule, when speaking Taiwanese (Min Nan Hwa) was forbidden, as was teaching Taiwanese history, in an attempt to subdue the populace. Much of the male population was forced to fight in the Japanese army, fighting wars we never wished to have a part in.
