my Typography teacher flip-flopped between photography and graphic design all through college. I think he eventually picked graphic design, but he still did photography things. now he art directs photoshoots for Martha Stewart and Antrhopologie and big fancy magazines like that. :O
it's tough to break into the photography business, but as long as you compliment it with design and business skills, it's a really great career.
