I think part of what makes it easier for me to make a good avatar is that I had an art teacher who really influenced how I view art. His favorite saying was "The ugly can be beautiful. The pretty, never." so I lean more toward visually interesting... and it just happens that I like to also have a color scheme in mind most of the time. lol
