That's a big question as far as Memories of Ice. It's a fantasy novel by Steven Erikson, the third book in the Malazan, Book of the Fallen series. (Suze got me onto it, and chews me out that I'm taking so long with it.) I've only read the first and this, and I'm going to go back to the second on that I skipped once I'm done here. There's...a lot going on. It's awesome though. Suze wrote a big spiel in the "101 Books" thread that says more about it.
An Imaginary Life is by David Malouf, and is about the Roman poet Ovid in exile and living with barbarians. It's also hard to explain. I'd maybe think of it as something of an illustrated philosophy rather than a narrative story.
Have some series cover art!
