Batty, I'm afraid you probably have picked up some sort of malware. Run a few different security scans and see what you pick up. You may have also installed some sort of browser toolbar (by accident, it's annoyingly easy).

If we were to ever run ads, they would be clearly marked in boxes labeled "Advertisement" and they would be injected into tasteful parts of the page. They'd also be Google ads. (They'd probably also be advertising video games.)
