When I first started, I bought everything in basic, red, violet, special, jade, and teal. I don't think it's too many colors to go for at all, especially with crane, event, and/or donation items to work with. I do think, though, that crimson/red are fairly similar in palette and you probably don't need to go for both right away. I would chose the one you like the shades of best then go for the other one once you get more of the items you're looking for and have some extra spending money.
