Legolas.. white orc.. dwarves fighting while in the barrels.. yeah. it's looking to deviate quite a bit just in a small trailer D:

Their taking stuff from the lord of the rings books as well, so there is variances from the book because their adding more to it, mostly to ake three full movies out of it. So yeah, it's not going straight off the book.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2013 10:22 AM

They're taking a fair bit more from the screenwriters' imaginations and perceptions of what would be "cool".... (while *saying* "oh, pffffft, it's in the appendices!". Uh, no. Not quite. Not at all, really.)

...I'm sure I'll somehow end up seeing this anyway, despite the overwhelming negativity I already have toward it.

Why? I never saw the first one. I just re-read the book. I plan on just reading the book three times instead of sitting through three Peter Jackson movies XD

the first one was excelent and i hope the desolation of smaug is even better

I am so excited for this movie. My friend and I went to see The Sea of Monsters and they had a trailer for it. I can not wait to see if the battle of five beast will be at the end of this one especially since they are mixing in Tolkens other book.

MASSIVE COMPLTE ABSOLUTE SPOILERS. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES READ UNTIL YOU'VE SEEN THE MOVIE.

Disclaimer: the following is full rant-mode Tolkien-purist Suze, those who somehow enjoyed this movie I wish you the very best and I hope the 3rd one is even better. You may not want to read, though. :P

My, comparatively brief and less ranty, opinion of said film.

Yes, spoilers.

To summarize:

Best part of the movie = Smaug
Second best part of the movie = the preview for Godzilla

Poggio 12-15-2013 08:34 PM

Its been ten years since I read the hobbit and seeing the movie amused me. I honestly have not watched the second LOTR because it makes me fall asleep and this movie had enough lull moments to make me do the same.

I loved the first Hobbit movie, it was funny, entertaining, and simply good entertainment. I never truly liked the Lord of the Ring trilogy because it was too much of a bore for me, but the Hobbit really changed my chain of thought. But with the second movie... It was going back to that Lord of the Rings that I come to hate, it still had the first movies charm and wit, but it truly lacked something.... The movie ended on a sour note, the first movie ended perfectly in my opinion it ended at a nice note making you ask your what's to come, while the 2nd movie ended at a sour note leaving you with the idea of what's already going to happen ruining the next movies suspense.

._.

Quiet Man Cometh 12-16-2013 02:05 AM

Other way around for me. Liked LOTR, didn't like The Hobbit, minus the Smaug part. The character portrayals didn't hold much attraction for me, much of the writing was blah, it really felt more like the Hobbit was a second attempt at Lord of the Rings rather than it's own film. It ended pretty much where I expected it to for a three movie approach, so I have no qualms about that.

I probably would have enjoyed the movie more if I hadn't already seen LOTR several times, since a lot of it felt like rehashed material.

o3o I feel like my interest in watching this movie has dipped slightly. D: Good thing it's not at the top of my list.

Lawtan 12-16-2013 10:49 PM

I want to see it for one hope: Somewhere there will be a dragon!
*Does a tap dance at the hopes of a decent dragon movie*

But yeah, the first movie seemed to break from a decent bit of the book, but at least not as much is being skipped as in the Rankin-Bass Hobbit cartoon.

I personally think 2, rather than 3, movies would settle it well.
