UAE Prose and Poetry Contest
Trisphee User Appreciation Event ~Prose and Poetry Contest~ http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/...phee/quill.png ~One hundred Word Prose Self explanatory. Entries must be under 100 words. No going over or the entry will be bumped up to the 500 word prose category. Yes, even if the word count is 101. ;). Title not included. ~Five Hundred Word Prose Also self explanatory. Prose entries 500 words or under, not including title. Anything over 500 words will be axed from the competition. Yes, I'm unforgiving! ~Haiku and Tanka As popular forms of poetry, these two get their own category. I'm going to be flexible here, and say that the five-seven-five format is not rigid, you can add a syllable or two here or there (haiku wasn't meant for the english language after all), but try not to over-do it. The short-longer-short line style needs to be there. ~Free Poetry Poetry in any form -or formlessness- you like, minus haiku and tanka which should and will be put in their particular category. Please keep your poem under 30 lines, stanza breaks not included. ;) Well! That gets the meat of the business out of the way. To enter the contest just PM your entry to me, Quiet Man Cometh, with the entry title and category in the PM heading. That makes things easy to sort for me. :). You can pic any topic you like, it's all fair game, but keep in mind that anything fanfiction related (unless it's *Trisphee fanfiction :D) runs the risk of not being understood and I'm not going to research piles of information in order to understand a story. You can add footnotes or a *tiny* introduction if you like, but it's best if you can keep all your content that's important to the story, in the story. And don't forget, punctuation and spelling counts! Good luck! |

I may just have to try some of these.
-gets excited- |
Oh please do!
And I guess I can mention that the thread isn't formal. People can natter as they like about the contest or writing in general or the fact that they got three gold ribbons! *cheers* |
I'm not sure if I'm allowed too
owo; I don't see why not, since I'm not really part of the writers anymore.. I'll ask fenfen later But before the end of the event I might just enter all of them -bwahahah |
Fun it by fen. The only snag might be if we do a staff vote, which isn't decided yet. If that's the case, then I'd say you just don't get to vote :p.
|
I'd say I wouldn't get to vote for MINE
xD but I could vote for others //at least that sounds fair in my mind owo; |
*is already coming up with ideas; this will be fun!*
|
yay, Rinni!
That is fair in a way if you want to judge, but it does give everyone else a wee big of an edge. But really it all depends on where the picks fall. |
Ohhh....not fair! Why did you have to make Tanka and Haiku just one category?
*pouts* That means I have to try to decide which one to enter... And I have to try and decide what other poem to use for the "free poem" section as well. XD |
Being similar as they are, they get their own category, but if you can find a way to work a haiku or tanka style into a piece of longer poetry, that could be considered for free poem.
Free poem is anything. It can be formed poetry like sonnets or limericks, free verse, or patterns you invent on the spot. |
I do know what free poem means, but thanks.
And alas, your suggestion for the tanka/haiku problem I am having cannot be fixed by working one into a free-poem for that category as I already have a couple of poems that I'm debating for that category as well. |
Ah. Well, I'll keep on eye on that and see if the one entry per category limit starts causing problems. That's always one of the snags when dealing with writing contests and such. What piece do you send?
|
I'm still debating for my haiku/tanka entry, but I think I have decided, and am about to send in my free poem one.
After staring at it, wondering why the flow wasn't right, I made a small line shift and realized it is now perfect. ^_^ |
Wow, that was fast! The event is hardly moving yet.
|
*shrug*
What can I say, I write a lot of poetry. Unless there's a rule I missed about it having to be written during the event, I've got dozens upon dozens of poems to choose from. |
I do better when there's topics or themes...though I'll prod the muse with a flaming stick to see if he wants to play....
|
Well, the default theme could be considered Trisphee, unless something else decides to make itself known.
|
Oh...this is good...I plan on winning, you know, right?
|
Fen said I'm not allowed to enter this. *pouts*
Looking forward to seeing everyone's submissions, though. :) |
No? Can you enter but not have it count? Do something anyway and post it here for inspiration, or just for something to do. ;). I suppose I could take me own words in that respect. Been in a writing mode of late yet have no produced anything beyond...I should just stop there.
You do that, Funk, ;) |
I like writing free poetry.. I don't even know what prose is. orz should probably learn..
|
You ever read a book? That's prose. ;) (well, most books). Basically, writing falls into two categories; prose and verse. Poetry and Skakespeare's plays are written in verse, and most everything else is written in prose.
At 500 words, one is usually looking at a very short story. At 100 words, even shorter, and tricky to pull off. |
..That clarifies virtually nothing. I read a lot of books, and I see no difference between one written and the other. XD;
Why didn't you just say 'short story' instead of 'prose'?! How the heck is poetry defined, now that it comes to this? My whole mind has been blown. /edit Oh, I see.. the title is 'prose AND poetry'. Sneaky. |
Ah. I see. Yeah, I limited prose by word count instead of picking a type, like short story or essay, etc. I want to see what people decide to do with it.
Defining poety is evil and every other person has their own idea of how to define it. I'm sure there's a univerisity course somewhere solely on what defines a poem, and probably a few books. I'm still a little lost when it comes to things like "prose poem." |
My university actually just added a course examining the characteristics of prose and poetry and how to blur the line between them. I didn't have the prerequisites to take it this semester, but hopefully it's still available next semester.
|
That would be cool. Care to pass me you're notes when you're done with them? Or make a study thread? ;). Could make an interesting clubhouse topic. :)
|
That would be a really interesting class. It's a shame university classes require prerequisites for anything that sounds fun. I would love to take upper-level classes from other majors just to learn about things I find neat but don't want to hardcore study.
|
You try auditing?
There are upper level courses that don't have pre-requisites to them. They are upper level for a reason though, and I found that when I tried to take a 3rd year course when I was just starting out. I just didn't have the grouding in the subject that most third years would have to I ended up taking it in third year anyway. I'd love to take the course on Asian literature, (there are a couple), but as an undefined studend I would get last pick in favour of those going to degrees, so there's little chance I would get in. There was a 26 person waiting list last time, and the course only had 30-40 slots. |
I suppose I could audit, or even just show up and sit in on a lecture like a ninja. Almost all the classes at my university that don't count for a gen ed credit are major-locked, though. Even the ones with open majors.
|
Ah. I'm tempted to go for a sociology major for the hell of it, since I have a good grounding in it and it would probably only take me a year anyway. Then I can catch up to my dad and aunt and have two degrees! ;). Not to mention better pick at courses that I want to take because I feel like it.
And by the way, we have some poetry entires now, but no prose. Where is the prose? Bring me prose! I decree that we need some! |
Double majoring is for cool kids. You should totally do it.
Do you want me to write you some sub-par prose? :D Just somebody toss me a topic (a planet or a couple NPCs or something) because I have no good writing ideas of my own. |
Oh I've got my degree already, but I was going for social sciences before I switched to English so I have a fair backinng and some upper level courses already. I'm not sure if the major would be added on or if it would be anothre BA.
You can put in prose if you wish. Take the event as your topic and use the shop NPC's. ;). That's the default if people need one. |
Ashy said bitchtits
Gall didn't like it at all Ashy doesn't care >.> |
Ashy is not red...
Something is wrong with the universe. All is not well. |
I have to at least try the haiku!
|
Oh please do! The more the merrier. :) Most of the time anyway. ;)
|
I'd like to enter more but I have so much to catch up on. *runs around like a crazy person*
|
I suppose there's always a chance for surprise inspiration. :).
