CONGRATS NEW YORKERS! NYS signs same-sex marriage bill into law

Quote:

A bill permitting same-sex marriage was passed by the New York state legislature on June 24, 2011. The bill was signed by Governer Andrew Cuomo shortly before midnight on the 24th, and the law will take effect 30 days later.
Quote:

Senate approval was the final hurdle for the same-sex marriage legislation, which was approved last week by the Assembly. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the measure at 11:55 p.m., and the law will go into effect in 30 days, meaning that same-sex couples could begin marrying in New York by late July.
New York Times story

8DDD Congratulations to all the gay and lesbian couples in New York, who finally have the right to legalize their unions! A dear close friend of mine can finally marry his bf and I am beyond excited and happy for him ;u; <33
One more step in the fight!

Nefer 06-25-2011 01:03 AM

*joins in the congratulations*

It's really great that there's another state who allows it now, a very big bravo to the judges etc who voted for it, they took the right decision ^^

Madam Kira 06-25-2011 01:05 AM

A large battle won, this is!
Just one more step towards equality.

Serra Britt 06-25-2011 02:40 AM

Stories like this make me happy when I read them. :3

Azrael 06-25-2011 03:29 AM

wow that's great! and in such a big state at that!

Nanka 06-25-2011 04:05 AM

I'm very glad to hear this. Now, only if Florida could take New York's lead.

Feythfull 06-25-2011 10:30 PM

congratulations I am glad to hear it though i am surprised that my dad didn't post anything on facebook about it

Ichiru 06-30-2011 06:50 AM

Congrats to everyone there. Finally! I am so happy about this, one step closer to equal rights.

17th 06-30-2011 11:34 PM

So glad it passed~ Now to hope the idiots here in TN can do it.

Illusion 06-30-2011 11:39 PM

I'm not gay or anything but I'm real happy for the change.
But seriously, the only people who are truly against this are what I call "Religious Bastards."
Just for clarification, I'm not calling anyone with a religion a bastard. Just those idiots who refuse human rights because it's against there beliefs.

nyreen 07-02-2011 12:58 PM

It makes me happy to see that the world is changing.

Vanitas 07-02-2011 02:11 PM

Wow ouo congratulations! I just hope other states follow NY's lead and so the same~

Quiet Man Cometh 07-03-2011 07:36 PM

It's great to see a step forward when there's so much happening around it. I'm happy for everyone who is benefited by this. :)

Kalei 07-03-2011 07:41 PM

*claps hands* Hopefully this will lead to a new trend.

Echo-chan713 07-09-2011 02:51 AM

I know, I'm from New York and when I saw that I was so happy and went "FINALLY! THANK YOU!!!" with the Hallelujah song in the mind playing. I was so excited that if I marry a girl I can get married in my home state :)

regine 07-21-2011 10:59 PM

I wish that it will be legal in all the countries...cause love sees no gender...and why are they against it? -.- they are not the one who feel that kind of love...

congratz new york...if my country will not legalize it.. I will prolly go to new york..and marry loved one..if it will be a same gender..

:> im bisexual so i support same sex marriage

Yokuutsu 07-22-2011 12:20 PM

I'm against all forms of marriage, no matter who is marrying who? Why? No one takes the vows seriously anymore. A lot of people's thoughts are....Oh...if this doesn't work out....we can get a divorce (or kill the other in some cases).

So I'm for everyone having civil unions and being equal. Just no marriages unless you stick to your vows (and this includes me)

Though, at times....some gay people make me wish that actually I'm not going there. Just know that some gay people set back the entire movement because of being like very religious people and won't listen to you talk. Even if they think you're completely wrong, snapping at the person that is against gays/gay marriage sure as hell isn't going to change their mind. And that's part of the reason it won't pass in every state. I've met one gay person, that if she was the first one I'd met, I'd be a gay basher too, but I also know some normal gay people thank God.

So, gay people of New York, you have a couple of days before you can get married, are you just going to go to the courthouse and be married or are you doing a ceremony? (If I was a gay man...I'd so want to wear a pretty dress somewhere .-.)

And sorry for the rant .-.

Echo-chan713 07-23-2011 02:01 AM

I actually had been asked to be married but it wasn't for love it was all for tax breaks (and at the time I was a virgin) and for the sex. Nothing sex (and we we're dating at the time)

Hoshi Astarte 07-23-2011 08:43 PM

I am really happy for all the people in New York. I think anyone who is truly in love should be able to legally wed.

Jurinjo 08-02-2011 09:36 AM

But how long will it last? Honestly I was surprised when Gay marriage was banned in California. Mom hasn't made any comment on these things (as the last time she did it was still legal in CA). But I"m sure she'd be upset at the fact it has been made legal in New York. No doubt leaders of the Religious group are upset as well.

Even before I realized I was gay I couldn't agree with some things she said. I mean yes legalizing marriage is kind of weakening the chances of conversion to christ due to the anti-same-sex platform supported by religious leaders [and NOT the bible by the way].

But really what right do we (Christians) have to enforce our beliefs on them through legal measures? I always believed the State and Church should remain separate. Just look at history...it never really does turn out pretty does it?

Alexander Linden 08-02-2011 10:44 AM

I heard that in the past couple weeks they tried to do the same thing in North Carolina, but it was pushed back to September because more people wanted to be involved in voting.

Belial 08-02-2011 10:52 AM

I also worry about how long it will last.

Politicians LOVE spouting out how tolerant and understanding they are yet the fact that this is not widely accepted already makes all of their speeches, lies.

We claim to be separated from church and state but only when it's convenient. If people were serious about tolerance and getting stuff done, this would have been news YEARS ago.

Alexander Linden 08-02-2011 11:40 AM

I really wish it HAD been done years ago. It's really sad that in this day and age when we are considered the 'land of the free' that we do not have these sorts of things legal yet. America is supposed to be all about freedom.

I will shit a brick if it happens in NC. I mean...I really really hope it does, hopefully I'll be there in time to vote for it if it comes to that but...I will be shocked.

Alexander Linden 08-05-2011 12:18 PM

Rem - Are you in NC too?

(。◕‿◕。) I heard about this. I'm happy for everyone who is able
to marry now. Now only if more states
would do this. Then the world would be
happy.

Oh. Well the Marriage Equality Rally is in September. I am not sure when the voting happens. I'm near Raleigh... Remmy needs to come near Alex!

Rem 08-05-2011 11:04 PM

Haha Remmy might!
He has one month to find a job and a place to live, or he won't be with his ex in Greensboro anymore lmao
Although my current workplace said I could try transferring so I'm going to do that and I bet I can, so I think the job thing is settled. It's just finding a place to live
I will probably HAVE to move in with someone seeking a roommate, the last few times I've tried to get an apartment on my own I've been rejected for bad credit history. >_<
I will remember that though! Where is the rally being held? And what side is Raleigh on?
I used to live near Asheville, I actually wouldn't mind moving back there, I really liked it. But I don't have a real -reason- to so...

Rumiel 08-06-2011 12:25 AM

*latches onto Remmeh's back* :3 Heya

I totally and completely agree with you here - It'll be a cold day in hell before I agree to marry anybody. The symbolism of vowing to spend the rest of your life with someone is nice and all, but that nice picture of two people staying together forever was shattered with the invention of divorce. Like all things in this world even marriage is about one thing only: money. Having equal share in it, having rights to it, blahdy blah.

But that being said, I am happy that at least one state has recognized the LEGAL and FINANCIAL rights that its citizens should be allowed, regardless of sexual orientation. And for those people out there who do still believe in upholding marriage vows to be with the one you love, I do feel that this fight should make everyone think a little harder about just what it means to be true to someone for better or for worse.

Moveon.org posted this photo, of a gay couple who were together for 23 years before they were finally allowed to marry in New York:

Raleigh is kinda in the middle xD Um... The rally kept getting moved, I'll have to find you the new date.

Awesome =D It's still a pity that they even have to deal with the court deciding things anyway, but i'm glad the court doesn't suck in new york
