The sexy parts... they exist!

I'm just curious to know how people feel about sex in the books they read. Do you skip right over the sexual parts, read them like it is God, or just continue through your book because it's not a big deal?

I'm just curious about how people feel about it.

Batty 06-03-2011 05:41 PM

HAHAHA. And of course, I'm the first one to respond to this topic. Brilliant. xD;

I read the sexy parts at LEAST five or six times. <.<; Especially if you know.. its taken four or five books to lead UP to the sexy time. I'm all "ITS ABOUT. FREAKING. TIME. GOD." -reads six times- I just enjoy reading about it, you know? I'm a physical person, and I get SO very attached to the characters I'm reading about. So if they score, mentally, I score. XD;

Does that sound weird to anyone else?

Serra Britt 06-03-2011 05:47 PM

I rarely read books with sexual parts in them, not because I don't like them but because they just don't seem to be in the books I normally read xD If they are tastefully written and descriptive I certainly do NOT skip over them, they are enjoyable to read xD

On the other hand I have read one or two with really poorly written ones that I glossed over.

CupcakeDolly 06-03-2011 06:05 PM

If it's a good book that's written well, then the sexy parts are like the cream filling of an Oreo - a nice creamy treat in the center of a chocolate cookie. x3

Nanka 06-03-2011 06:23 PM

@Batty: Doesn't sound weird to me. xD
@Serra Britt: I guess you don't read many romance novels. x3
@Cupcake: It has to be tasteful for me to read as well. c:

Serra Britt 06-03-2011 06:29 PM

Nanka, no, I don't, the few that I did read fell under that "poorly written" part ^^; I'm sure there are good romance novels out there I just never encountered them :P

Nanka 06-03-2011 06:36 PM

I only read a Romance series because it is all fantasy and the sex scenes are good. >.>

Shei_Beloved 06-03-2011 06:55 PM

I use to only read them for the sex parts but after a while it got old and now I only read them for the plot I kind of just skip the sex scenes now unless it's a really really good one.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-03-2011 07:21 PM

I pretty much just skim for dialogue, just in case something plot-important gets mentioned. Otherwise, I tend to skip right over them. They just do nothing for me. My reaction is usually "yep, okay, they have sex, let's get back to the story now".

I don't usually like books that have many and/or overly detailed sex scenes. Like... the Pillars of the Earth which I just finished reading, had no less than five multiple-page rape scenes from the perspective of the rapist, which honestly makes me question the psyche of the writer.

That's the only sort of thing that really bothers me. Consensual scenes are just boring filler to me, as I'm asexual.

CupcakeDolly 06-03-2011 09:33 PM

I've been reading the Quantum Gravity series, which looks at love more... objectively than most books, I guess. It's a fantasy/sci-fi series, but with romance deep down at its core. What I really like about it is that it has graphic sex scenes, but they don't run for too long and they don't appear too frequently - the first book has only one toward the end, and I think at least one of the books has no sex at all.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-03-2011 09:43 PM

One of my favorite series, The Prince of Nothing trilogy is full of over-the-top graphic sex, but the way it's written actually works for me. On one hand, it adds an element of icky horror to his orc-equivalents that makes them a lot more terrifying than the generic bad guys in most fantasy. On the other hand, the normal sex in the books feels completely unromantic, and often disgusting, which is the point, since the world of Earwa... just sucks. Despite how often it comes up in the story (one of the main characters is a prostitute) it never really feels gratuitous.

Alexis Rider 06-03-2011 09:49 PM

well, Like most people if the book is well put together and their is a point to the sexy part ya sure. tho it dosn't have to have a point beside make them more intimate. I don't like if it is to down and dirty though.

Echo-chan713 06-04-2011 12:59 AM

I would just reread that part and be done with it, I'm a smutty type of girl. I want to read the smut book that my friend is reading, maybe when we see each other, I'll borrow the book since Libraries don't carry them XD

Sexi n books are AMAZING depending on how its worded that can turn me on or get confused. Sorry to kill it but I love the fanfiction yaois they are close to really well written depending on the writer if it's between a romancer that gets the character personalities and conflicts, etc or a 15 year old yaoi fangirl that says "Screw the rules let's have SEX!"

*Needs to facbook friend for book*

Funkduder 06-04-2011 04:53 AM

Of the books I read with the sexual parts... I read over them once or twice.
It's kinda cool, in a way, but I'm still reading the book for the rest of the story.

Jurinjo 06-04-2011 11:45 AM

I tend to skip over them. I've read books with some very intimate flirting/kissing/touching which I don't mind. But when it delves into actual sex- not so much. Then again the only sex scenes in the book I can think of is between a male starship captain and a male ship engineer. The other relationships, no matter the gender combination, usually ends up with one of the two dying before intercourse ever happens. =\

EDIT: oh and said starship captain is dying of an incurable neurological disease....and his boyfriend is now a god. Makes no sense without context does it? xD

Elf healer 07-16-2011 10:12 PM

Hehe, if you knew me in real life, you would think I'm cute and innocent (most of my friends do XD), but when I'm alone, I'll be reading yaoi and romance books that have the full sex scene in it XD I lost my innocence long ago xD

Taki 07-16-2011 10:47 PM

I don't read romance novels. XD

But the science fiction series I'm reading has sex in it, but very VAGUE mentions of it so I just looool at it. XD

Although I have read plenty of Yaoi mangas and do not rush through the sex < u<~~~~

Ladyduet 07-17-2011 01:12 AM

I enjoy them but i dont buy books based on whether they have one or not. Why should i skip it when there is sometimes good things said that has nothing to do with sex.

Jenny Harper 07-17-2011 05:05 AM

I read books for the sake of the pr0nz sometimes. I read this one set of novels and read the sexy bits again and again. Yum. But only if they describe parts. No purple headed warriors please.

Rem 07-17-2011 09:04 AM

Oh god yes some of the descriptions are just ... XD Esp in romance novels. Quivering sword of desire, is one I remember quite fondly.

I don't really read romance novels much, but there's a few novels I read in the past that had pretty detailed sex scenes and I read those over and over a few times >u> Depends, sometimes they're hot, sometimes they're just like...
YES AYLA YOU AND JONDALAR F--K A LOT, I GET IT
lmao
(book series I've read that has a looooot of sex in it)

I do enjoy reading good erotica though. -u- It all has it's place.

Poggio 07-17-2011 01:37 PM

It depends if I am in the mood for it. But then again, Im the type of person that skips to get to the part that I want to read. Most of the books that I read have two characters and I guess for dramatic effect they put other characters inbetween to make people wait to see whats going on. I just skip a head. Some times with sex I skip a head other times I'll read it.

I have to admit I have my collection of Anne rice novels xD.

Yokuutsu 07-18-2011 12:24 PM

I just continue on. It's no big deal....except in certain books...it's really hilarious to read the sex scenes so sometimes I read them multiple times to laugh :3

Saiyouri 07-20-2011 01:19 AM

(。◕‿◕。) I actually never read a book with sexy parts
in it yet. I have been thinking about
reading Anne Rice vampire series but
I still haven't deceided if I want to
read about sex. I don't care if it's
sex between men, sex period is what
I don't know about. I'm personally really
shy about sex, even in my own marriage
so reading about it is something hard
for me to do. I know I sound really
pathetic lol.

Yokuutsu 07-20-2011 01:52 PM

Read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward.

Sex everywhere...that is all lol (There is a plot I promise...)

Mysticism 07-20-2011 09:18 PM

I know with a few of the books I've read, when it comes up, I'm like "..Ohh.. My. Gosh.. Hotness already? Epic!" And then just continue of with the book and go back to the scene after finished that chapter of something xD
I'm weird like that xD

SanguaLuna 08-02-2011 03:45 PM

I read paranormal romance novels all the time and they are in there. Not as hardcore any more as they use to be or not the one's I read. They are more about story, then they are about full on sex scenes. It is a mixture of both, which is a good taste verses the romance novels that are nothing BUT sex.

Alexander Linden 08-02-2011 08:39 PM

I'll read them. I read books cover to cover and never skip a part.

Lioshika 08-08-2011 08:38 PM

>_>
I usually slow down while reading those sections; savoring the imagery.

17th 08-21-2011 09:18 PM

I might read them, but only if my head-music is turned up loud enough. Most of the time I just can't be bothered to actually read those parts (which is hilarious because I've written worse than I've ever read...), so I just skip over them more often than not.

Yokuutsu 08-21-2011 10:36 PM

I like reading the fanfics and stuff with the sexy bits.

Except on campus....the chance of fangirl squee....is too much. And giggling :3

Lioshika 08-21-2011 11:20 PM

I try to enjoy them no matter what. It's my business of what I'm reading, I'm an adult. It shouldn't matter.

Kylie 08-27-2011 04:52 PM

I used enjoy reading the sex scenes in the paranormal romance books I read. But now they're just overdone. o.o; So I mainly skip over those scenes unless they are "important" and I try to read the dialogue if there is any going on during the sex scene.

Wicked 09-09-2011 03:26 AM

If it's important to the story I love me some steamy scenes.
Especially if it's been built up and the tension is high. When you've been waiting for the characters to get together. It's just when it's sex for the sake of sex and starts to feel smutty that it bugs me. The Anita Blake series was getting like that for awhile but thankfully the last two books have focused more on the action and adventure parts. There's still sex and frankly, quite a bit of it but it's doesn't feel like porn anymore.

Fiyero 09-12-2011 10:41 PM

If its immaturely done, I roll my eyes and continue on. Otherwise, it doesn't exactly phase me.

Putterfly 09-16-2011 01:46 PM

Nah, I prefer to read the whole book :D

NessaRose 11-18-2011 03:39 PM

i read the parts, its no big deal, though i did get a book that had short erotic stories, and i will admit, all the sex did get alittle disturbing.

Alpha 11-22-2011 09:26 PM

I read through and might glance at again once or twice, but honestly it's part of the story so I see no reason why not to. It is perfectly natural and part of being human.

Tiva 11-22-2011 09:32 PM

I read them and if it is well written or something I haven't thought about trying I will read them several times over and then grin evilly. I can still remember a scene were the 'helpless maiden' was covered head to toe in spiced rum and licked clean. I am a visual reader, and there for some scenes stay stuck in my mind. The sex scenes aren't the most important thing but damn do they make a book good.

DarkForbidden-Love 11-23-2011 12:49 AM

I read them like the rest of the book. But the genre I read most often won't have sex senses unless they are really odd/out of this world. They hold no special meaning to me but I don't skip them.

Zenella 11-23-2011 03:35 AM

The books I read don't normally have sex in them (though sometimes I'm like dying for it to happen >.>) but when I do read books that have sex in them, I pay close attention to it. Mostly because I need to learn how to write sex scenes and reading it helps me learn. But hey, it's hawt when written properly ;D
