I figured this was the best place to put this since it's talking about Avatars and Avatar Outfits.

You ever get an outfit up that you finally REALLY like and save it to show it around when you post and then some jerk suddenly IMs you out of nowhere claiming you stole their outfit or someone they know's outfit all because you're wearing one, two, maybe three items they happen to be wearing too?

I have this happening right now on another website, because I'm wearing four items on my avatar that someone else had on and I guess one of their friends noticed the four items I'm wearing, so they PMed me. "Why do you look like ____?"

.______. It just pisses me off that people think just because someone's using a few items as someone else, it means they stole their avatar outfit. I don't even look at people's avatars to get ideas for my own. I use the dream avatar creators or if they don't have one yet, I wing it.

Have you ever dealt with something like this before?
What did you do about it if so?
If someone really DID steal your outfit on here or any avatar site in general, what would you do?

Nicole 02-18-2011 11:15 AM

I wouldn't care if they stole the outfit cause honestly it just means they can't think for themselves.. that and the site is limited to what you can wear as well. So ya.

Iggy 02-18-2011 12:22 PM

I've had that happen to me on another site. Just because I had a similar color scheme and a couple of the same items doesn't mean I stole it. I hadn't even seen the avi I was compared to so I was like...whaa?

Mica 02-18-2011 07:55 PM

LOL, I think that's an incredibly silly thing to get worked up on. I personally wouldn't care if someone stole my avatar, because guess what, I'll probably make a new one. It'd be annoying, admittedly but it's not a big deal.

I have never experienced that though. XD

Poggio 02-18-2011 08:17 PM

XD, its a little hard you know when every one has the same set of items to buy or can afford.

Jurinjo 02-19-2011 04:07 AM

Yes it's seriously stupid. Unless by some cosmic event that two people are wearing the exact same outfits in every possible way. But creativity is limited to the people and the items themselves. Inevitably things will look similar, especially with new items. Some outfits don't stick out much because it's been thought of already and done in a similar fashion. Such is the case here. Ignorant people.

Espy 02-19-2011 04:35 AM

Ju, someone might think I stole your usual theme from during that event XD

Jurinjo 02-19-2011 09:17 AM

haha that does look kind of like something I'd come up with...THIEF! D< xD

actually you even used Zypher's Rings..hmm ironically I own all those items except the belt vest and the top wings (I think)

Your siggy caught my attention. I loved playing Ragnarok, it was one of my first MMOs x3

Panda 02-19-2011 11:30 AM

Mine is always different from everyone else and cuter than everyone else. :D

If you know what I'm talking about.

Not the best avatar but always cute.

Feythfull 02-19-2011 10:12 PM

no that has never happened to me maybe because things I like other people seem not to like lol but don't let it get to you as long as you like your avatar thats all that matter. I know that I see alot of avatars looking alot alike on most avatar sites.

Ginger 02-19-2011 11:08 PM

Yes, I have had people claim that I was copying them before. It is extremely annoying. I've also seen avatars that look like mine in one way or another, but I wouldn't care if they copied my avatar. Doesn't matter much to me. It's just an outfit and if need be, I would just change it to make it look better than it was when they copied me.

Uke 02-20-2011 05:40 PM

Unless you're exactly copying someone's entire avatar, I don't consider it 'stealing'... and honestly, if someone wants to make an avatar exactly like mine, I'd consider it a compliment.

I've actually had someone on a site get mad at me for copying their avatar when I was cosplaying the same character they were.

nipple ring 02-21-2011 11:45 AM

      • no i don't think this has happened to me before > u >
sounds really annoying but i would probably ignore
it since they are just pixels after all and i liked the
avatar i made. but if someone stole my outfit
i wouldn't pm them or whatever. i'd just say it out loud and
        get over it.

Reyoki 02-21-2011 05:57 PM

I've had that happen to me a couple times in the past. I'd just change my avi and get on with my life. Seriously, it's not worth having a conniption fit over a bunch of pixels.

I've seen it happen a lot with noobs when a whole bunch of new items are released and they all slap as many of them on their avis as possible, then go around saying "Look how awesome I am because I have all these shiny new items! Hey wait, you have a whole bunch of shiny new items, too! You must be trying to copy me because I'm so awesome! Stop it!"

rawkabilly 03-02-2011 03:17 PM

I think I may have stolen someone's outfit... but I'm a newbie so *shrug*

Reyoki 03-02-2011 03:37 PM

Meh, everyone's worn an outfit similar to that one before, so I think we can forgive you. *ruffles rawk's hair*

That made me smile C:

Echo-chan713 03-04-2011 03:08 AM

I wouldn't have the ability to steal a look in for the firat time on here because they were from the free Pandora set.

It's somehow ignorant to claim that you steal their look from a different website.

Batty 03-04-2011 03:36 AM

Have you ever dealt with something like this before?;; Yup. Indeed I have. I was entirely pissed off about it too. It was an EXACT. RIP. Only difference? They used a different hair style. Found out they had stalked my threads and crap, too. ><;

What did you do about it if so?;; Oh, I PMed her right away. I wasn't accusatory, I just asked why she had on the exact. same. items. as. me. Didn't ask her to change, I actually volunteered to do it, since she seemed to like the idea so much.

If someone really DID steal your outfit on here or any avatar site in general, what would you do?;;
Probably the same. I mean, if I REALLY liked the avatar, I might PM the person asking if they'd like to roam the forums as twins, or something... unless I worked extra... EXTRA hard on it. Then, I may just ask them politely to change.

Hello Kitty 03-07-2011 04:19 PM

She's not at work
She's not at school
She's not in bed

That's really lame. It's not like you can customize each item to fit your avatar. Everyone has the same items to work with, there's bound to be some overlap.

If I saw someone with an avatar that was incredibly similar to mine, I wouldn't think anything of it. They saw the same item and got the same idea. No big deal.
I think I finally broke her

Reyoki 03-11-2011 09:51 AM

*snerk* I logged on this morning to find I have a visitor message along the discussion line of this thread XD

I love your avi ~steals~
I must say, I'm actually quite flattered.

Kaguya 03-11-2011 10:00 AM

I've had it happen to me... someone pm'ing me about my avi being the same as theirs

my reply was

"Well here's how i see it

1. I've never met you so it there was a slim to no chance that our avi's would be the same and slim left the building

and

2. they say mimicing is the highest form of flattery now shut the hell up and leave me alone"

I found out from a mutual friend that they guy actually stole my avatar idea and I was like "-.- why did he bother me then"

---

Reyoki, that would be me lol

Reyoki 03-11-2011 10:30 AM

Chasm: I know; I didn't use your name because I thought it might be rude. That you like my avi enough to say something like that made me smile!

Kaguya 03-11-2011 12:17 PM

I don't mind if my name is used, btw I hope you like the little story thing I wrote for the story based avatar thread ^^

I like smiling people... then they dun wanna kill me... bad side of it is they want to hug me instead

Reyoki 03-11-2011 12:33 PM

I do like it! You have good talent as a writer. The thing is, though... my avi is female XD

Meh, I'm not much one for hugs. I'm more of a friendly punch on the arm type of person.

Kaguya 03-11-2011 12:36 PM

easy fix.
I am glad you like it and thank you for the compliment on my writting ^^
perhaps we should rp some time and I can kill you with walls XD

I'm a don't touch me kind of person

Jyuudaime 03-13-2011 04:00 AM

http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...tei27thing.png

Tsk, since on Avatar sites I "AviCosplay", my outfits are always used and copied, but sometimes I don't care, because I feel rather flattered that someone took all that time to find each and every single item I used, to copy me. I tip my invisible hats to them.

Abused mule 03-15-2011 12:36 PM

I've never had that happen... Since i kinda tend to make avatars with the items none uses. = V=;; [[but totally end up making them look good~]]

But... I don't see why people get all huffy about stuff like that. It's like if a lot of people at your school shops at the same variety of stores, they're bound to be wearing the same things sometime or another. :l

M ¥ D € © 03-18-2011 07:55 PM

I have. Usually is just explain to them in great detail why this was stupid, why this isn't true, and why this was rude of them. After asking them to kindly not spam me about people I obviously don't know.

Delicious Nightmare 05-24-2011 11:41 AM

If that happened to me i would tell them to take it up with the site makers. there is so many items, and like here lots of the items are great or at least i hope they are. And there is only so many way to build a great looking outfit. And look a likes are going to happen.

Lunaryon 05-25-2011 01:44 AM

Since I've only been on Trisphee, I've never had to deal with this, but I find it kind of stupid. 'Oh NOES! You stole me identity!'

Sadrain 05-25-2011 12:48 PM

No one has really STOLEN my outfit... It's just that often, when i come up with something witty, after a week, a whole bunch of avvies with similar layerings or neat things, pop out. They use brighter colors, so they get more attention than mine. I don't do anything about it, except maybe smirk a little. I don't know what I would do if someone stole my outfit to every detail... Probably nothing. Poor them, if they can't make something original, though.

SanguaLuna 05-26-2011 10:03 AM

Usually my outfits are not copied or mimicked much. I do outfits that tend to be a little different then the norm. Though this outfit is mainly a set, I try using different elements to complete the site. I use a color scheme not many people use because in a way it does match. I try not to be the same on each site I am on and if I happen to be similar to someone else, I could careless. I think people get their balls twisted about these things and it is childish.

Rose Pearl 05-26-2011 05:51 PM

http://i52.tinypic.com/ayu0p2.jpg

I will say this
there is not rule where it says one person owns certain avi..plus you have right to put items on even if they have it on too..I mean you are not the only one who wear same three items

http://i54.tinypic.com/5ujsjm.jpg

Glitch 05-26-2011 06:54 PM

I haven't had it happen to me -- however. If somebody has an outfit I think is super cute I will blatantly tell them I going to be their twin. If they say no then there would be no fun in that - so I wouldn't do it. But of the times I have, they usually tell me they are excited about it. And then we post in the same forums and are very silly.

I would say the only thing I'd ever steal from someone, is if they have a color combo I really like, I might make an avatar with those colors. I'd try not to make it look the same though.

Typically when I do make an outfit though, I find one item I like and make my avatar based around it.

Nightmare 05-26-2011 07:03 PM

I've dealt with this on gaia before. Someone decided to confront me and say I stole their avatar, but I actually didn't, they stole mine. x n x It really urks me when someone says that I stole their avatar when I came up with it or had someone make it for me and then they take it from me.

Lucid: 05-26-2011 09:20 PM

honestly, if I see someone else use a color combo or a layering trick that I really like, I'll "steal" it. but I always incorporate it into my own style. like, see Nightmare's awesome layering with the slant socks? I love that. I want to try it someday, when I actually get more than two colors of slant socks. but my avi's not going to look anything like hers when I do end up making it.

Kotomi 05-29-2011 12:36 AM

I'd more likely not care, one everyone could get the chance to get the item, two there are other people out there so many times who have also come up with the same idea as I had when I was younger and actually started to make a profit off it which I had no way to make it at the time I thought of it
so I guess I'm used to seeing others with the same ideas as i do on sites... or elsewhere

Sushi 05-29-2011 10:22 AM

I don't think I've ever been accused of stealing someone's avatar, or accusing someone else. lol. Just seems kinda petty, in my opinion. I've had avatars that look similar to someone else, but they had different items, etc. Usually I compliment the other person anyway!

I do like some of the color schemes that other people use so I might try it eventually, but my taste is different than someone else. I've never had this problem but I could definitely understand how it could be annoying.

Gwynllid 07-13-2011 05:31 PM

I've found people using similar items as me to compliment their wardrobe, but more often than not, rather than point out "Ohh, you stole it" or whine about it like some freaking child, I say, "Oh hey, I've got an avatar that uses those items, too. Want to see?" and proceed to show them. Then, the person and I usually end up chatting for a good 5-10 minutes about different things that could be added or traded out on our respective outfits to improve them.
