Wait, what?

Is it just me, or is there something horribly wrong with that sentence? Are these traps supposed to be sentient?

EDIT: This is a joke, folks: I'm amused by the image that sprang to mind by the funny wording of that sentence. I hope you were too. :)

Ashurato 11-21-2010 06:51 PM

My trap also plays Bingo on Sundays. Doesn't yours?

Azrael 11-21-2010 06:52 PM

I don't... know the problem... No one won if a trap was not triggered. It just means that you both chose trap so it's a tie?

Alexander Linden 11-21-2010 06:52 PM

Um no... the sentence is not implying that they are sentient...

Vox 11-21-2010 06:53 PM

I keep my trap shut...*dismayed* I hope they don't have active lobbyists or special interest groups, I don't want to have to pay it for services rendered.

Oh boy... the trap union's going to file a complaint if they find out.

But only a living creature can hide, as hide is an active verb and presupposes an action done by the thing doing the hiding. A person can hide, an animal can hide, but an object cannot hide itself. Now if they had said "lie unused," that would make sense, since "lie" is passive.

:3 ohh the vagaries of English...

Gasp! Not the union!
Imma have the "boys" have a chat with the trap and make it...see no reason to ever go to the authorities. And now I will practice saying "capiche."

Ashurato 11-21-2010 07:05 PM

I wouldn't worry too much. I hear it hides well. XD

(( OOC:
@Ashurato- Ah man, I needed that.

@Vox- Maybe it was just a mishap, I know they have been working on this for a while now, maybe it was just a simple spelling error, hell I do it sometimes.))

Sweety... that's called personification. It happens a lot with inanimate objects in writing.

No...it happens a lot with authors. Careless authors. xD
It's the kind of thing that made Jay Leno's "Headlines" possible.

Alexander Linden 11-21-2010 08:56 PM

All I'm saying is that personification is /common/ in writing.

Cronislee 11-21-2010 08:57 PM

You hide a boobytrap so its triggered by the boob. If the trap isnt triggered, it stays hidden. Theres nothing wrong with the sentence.

La Diablesse 11-21-2010 09:10 PM

well hiding is a human action...but there is no problem with it. =]

Just like petals dancing in the field or the wind whispering in your ears. Nothing wrong, unless you personally have a problem with that writing style.

See, it goes back to her no matter how you try it.

SilverPhoenyx 11-22-2010 12:16 AM

Is anyone else finding the event SLOW to load?

Vox 11-22-2010 12:24 AM

Um...I am on a different computer with an up to date monitor...and just found that I put a thumbs down on this thread. I thought it was a big red question mark earlier, on my home computer. Oops. My home monitor is a piece o'junk.

And YES it's slow to load...Trisphee staff were not expecting such a high turnout and it's overloaded the servers. ^^;;

Taishi 11-22-2010 11:26 AM

My trap won a vacation to Miami and left me behind T,T

Ashy 11-24-2010 11:52 PM

The trap could be a person, or an ill tempered sea bass...

Taishi 11-27-2010 08:00 AM

More than likely a spoilt little sibling, they then to be traps all into themselves

femme gauche 11-27-2010 11:05 PM

Haha, I know what you mean, but I never thought it at all weird. But I see what you mean, just because the verb is personifying it.

Pandora 12-09-2010 10:50 PM

LOL thats so awesome, traps that go chasing people for us.

Angel Spirit Girl 12-10-2010 01:44 PM

Yeah. I guess it would be more proper grammar to say that the traps remained hidden. XD

Pandora 12-10-2010 04:11 PM

I am fond of the trap I do not often use it, but I am going to take mine home with me and name him Sam. <3

Kit Katy 12-27-2010 09:25 PM

I must be slow because I don't really see what's funny about the sentence structure. o.o;
