It's a feature. Your cube will turn into a jigsaw and thus you get two games in one.

I used to just peel the stickers off and reattach them in their color blocks. Have they changed how they're made so that's no longe rpossible?

The only one I ever got my hands on several years ago didn't have stickers, but it wasn't the original cube. I guess it depends on the manufacturer.
