Where in the World is the Criminal Mastermind?

Detectives, don't get too comfortable with your summer holiday. An urgent message has just arrived at the agency! Come to the mission room for your briefing.

+++ Notorious thief stole the Washington Monument! Last seen escaping to (it seems part of the message was cut off) +++

Alright, so we don't know yet why our unknown criminal stole a building, or what they need it for. But uh... we kinda want it back. So this is your chance to prove your deduction, research skills and world knowledge. Head to foreign countries all over the world in your pursuit, and we are going to pay you with crayons. Unfortunately the agency can't pay premium flights, but even in tourist class you're in for the adventure of your lifetime. Not to mention the wonderful feeling when you're finally able to return the stolen goods. The agency hopes there's only one thief on the loose, but there may be several. Anyway, let's arrest the current one first.

What you need to know:

This will be a chase through at least five different countries (more, if you take a wrong turn somewhere). After that the current game ends.

Your goal is to catch a thief. If you take more than two wrong turns per round, you lose too much time and the thief gets away. You still receive crayons for your effort, but no arrest bonus.

Each correct country you traveled to earns you 2 crayons, which means a total of 10 crayons per person per round can be won from traveling and investigating. Should you manage to arrest the thief (aka arrive at the final country with two or less wrong destinations inbetween) you receive another 10 crayons.

Use the clues to figure out where you need to travel next. At any time you can also choose to pay 1 crayon for an additional hint or to ask a question about the next travel destination, but you're not allowed to outright ask for the name of the country.

Good detectives rely on team work. You're not competing with your fellow gumshoes - you help each other out and try to catch a thief with combined efforts. Discussion in this thread is not only allowed, but also encouraged.

When you have decided where you want to travel, mark your destination in bold or colored font so the agency knows to book you a flight.

The agency uses group discount. Planes to the next destination will take off when at least four people have agreed on a single country; or in case opinions wildly differ, when seven people announced their destinations. That is when you find new clues.

Uh... Death?

Why is there a huge stone thing in my backyard? What am I supposed to do with it?

...and huh, what do you mean with RUN!?

Death by Mirrors 08-15-2018 06:46 PM

Well, you wanted to contribute to the event, right? See, I got this lovely red coat and matching hat for you, so you can just-

Veshora 08-15-2018 06:54 PM

Hrmph. That's not how I meant it. What? Looking for a great actress? Aww, now you're making me blush ^^;

Fine, fine. I'll do it. Let me just rehearse and play a random stranger first.

*looks around* Ahem. A thief, you say? Yes, yes! I've seen a thief. She ran that way... *points to the airport* ...and she said something about a metal concert she wanted to attend. She even dropped a flyer, which I have right here - oh, wait. Why are there dinosaurs on it? And that stain right here... hm. Smells like tar.

Do you think this could help you, detectives?

Death by Mirrors 08-15-2018 07:28 PM

It better does, because the game is open and the chase is on!

mdom 08-15-2018 07:30 PM

Ok so we're going to country with dinosaurs! Easy!

Derpy McBlueEyes 08-15-2018 07:32 PM

"Agent McBwueEyes weporting for duty!"

Death by Mirrors 08-15-2018 07:49 PM

Admit it, you've always wanted to see dinosaurs rocking the stage.

Y'all in... Finland?

Witchchylde 08-15-2018 09:28 PM

The LeBrea Tar Pits in Los Angeles?

mdom 08-15-2018 09:57 PM

I also vote Finland

Derpy McBlueEyes 08-15-2018 10:09 PM

Derpy squints at the flyer/clue for a long time, then finally nods. "We're going to Finland!"

Den 08-15-2018 11:29 PM

I also think it's the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California, United States.

Veshora 08-16-2018 04:50 AM

Detectives, remember: if you have decided for certain on your destination, mark it bold or colored (or both, like bluebird) so we know you actually want to go there and aren't just discussing possibilities.

In the meantime we bought you some ice cream to sweeten your wait time. Don't worry, it doesn't taste like tar. I mean, who on earth would do this anyway. Tar... ice cream!?

Quiet Man Cometh 08-16-2018 05:18 AM

And here I was going to say she was over in the butter thread.

Finland I believe it is!

mdom 08-16-2018 10:49 AM

Let's go to Finland

Den 08-16-2018 09:27 PM

Alright, then, to Finland we go.

Death by Mirrors 08-17-2018 04:13 AM

Flights are booked, and the majority has decided to hop to Finland, so Witchchylde can spend a day at the LeBrea Tar Pits uninterrupted. She finds an awesome dinosaur fossil - though no trace of any thieves.

Meanwhile, bluebird, Derpy, Quiet, mdom and Den try to get in backstage at the Hevisaurus concert. A roadie guides them through the building, and indeed for a moment they catch a glimpse of a red coat. Unfortunately then they way is blocked by lots of screaming kids who wave their pencils and notebooks in the air. Apparently the stars of the evening just arrived. Now you can...

stay and watch the concert

search the place for hints

Quiet Man Cometh 08-17-2018 04:27 AM

Do we just pick one?

bluebird 08-17-2018 04:31 AM

Technically there's no way for me to check if you clicked one or both, sooo... luckily you got enough time to listen to dino music and search the place ^^

Quiet Man Cometh 08-17-2018 04:34 AM

I could just see what my opinion is and then change my mind. ;)

bluebird 08-17-2018 04:34 AM

wait we have to pick? ahhh maybe the thief is planting a false trail to mexico.
RIP i already made my choice so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
oh good 8D

Veshora 08-17-2018 04:38 AM

Note to self: include false trails

Quiet Man Cometh 08-17-2018 04:39 AM

The band is okay, I guess. Kids and all.

Alas, I missed a clue or two for dawdling. (Didn't read all the text)

I agree, Mexico!

bluebird 08-17-2018 04:49 AM

internal screaming

Derpy McBlueEyes 08-17-2018 05:12 AM

Unfortunately for Derpy, dinosaurs and dragons look a lot alike and, despite some pretty obvious differences, especially size, he gets mistaken for a member of the band and is temporarily caught up in the crowd. Thankfully, it only takes a few minutes for him to convince the kids that he's just another fan and he's able to follow the other agents.
He emerges, grumpy but relatively unscathed, but proceeds to sulk and glare at the agents who left him behind for several minutes before examining the clues.
"Yeah, let's go the Mexico." he says, as he resumes his sulking.

mdom 08-17-2018 11:16 AM

how do I delete someone else's post

Vamos para Mexico!

Derpy McBlueEyes 08-17-2018 03:14 PM

Derpy climbs up and tapes a piece of paper over Bluebird's post.
"All gone!"

Death by Mirrors 08-17-2018 05:43 PM

bluebird, Quiet, Derpy and mdom have decided on their next destination. The flight to Mexico is delayed for half an hour, but at least the airport shops look nice. Finally they arrive and look around for clues.

A security camera shows the thief sitting on a park bench, reading a magazine. Unfortunately that recording is already a few hours old. It's highly unlikely the thief will still be there. And of course she isn't. But in a trash can nearby lies the crumpled magazine she was reading. The lettering looks strange, and the photos are even stranger. Turd shaped cookies? Seriously? And statues that suspiciously resemble parts of the male anatomy. Huh.

Upon further investigation the detectives also find a pocket planner. The 14th of each month is marked with a heart. It looks as if the planner was a dress manufacturer's freebie, because it also shows adverts of wedding dresses. They're red, just like the thief's coat.

Interrogating the people nearby doesn't yield much information. Just a young man with a laptop nods at the thief's description. "Yeah, I remember. She asked me if I would use Internet Explorer for online banking. I said, no way! But apparently she's heading someplace where it's against the law to use a different browser." He pauses for a moment, then shakes his head. "I can't believe that's true. Can you?"

Quiet Man Cometh 08-17-2018 07:27 PM

With no google or research what-so-ever...China. Somewhere in that vicinity. Though, that's almost entirely based on the red wedding dresses. Not sure about the anatomy statues though, because that would have me thinking (Ancient) Greece. Though, those weren't merely "resemblances."

bluebird 08-17-2018 07:56 PM

i thought it was japan with all the bizarre stuff going on but
penis park, holiday on every 14th, and the funny/concerning fact that most businesses still use old software despite how it's in one of the most technologically advanced country is---

sounds like south korea 8D

mdom 08-17-2018 07:58 PM

Strange lettering could be China, too.
And 'against the law to use anything other than IE'. In China Google is blocked.

Veshora 08-17-2018 08:39 PM

*tapes a sticky note to the thread*
Don't forget to grant Mexico crayons tomorrow.

Den 08-17-2018 08:57 PM

I think it could be South Korea as well.

mdom 08-19-2018 11:09 AM

I'll go for China
