Civilization V

Does anyone play? If so, would anyone be interested in playing multiplayer? I have all the expansions, and really, really, really enjoy Civ.

Who's your favorite civilization? Do you have multiples? Who do you hate?

Lucid: 10-18-2015 11:32 PM

Oh. My. Gosh. So besides League of Legends (which luckily doesn't display time spent playing near as proudly as my Steam games), Civ 5 is my most played game of all time. I actually haven't played it in a long time (a few months lol), but according to Steam, I have a modest 546 hours of Civ 5 playtime.

I like to random my civ most of the time, but I really enjoy playing tall & peaceful. Rather than having favorite civs, I have favorite wonders! Like Temple of Artemis, Petra, Eiffel Tower...Some wonders I almost always ignore and some I almost always build at all costs, haha.

I'd be totally down for a multiplayer game sometime; although, when we're going to find enough hours in a day that works for enough people, I don't know. :P but you (and anyone else who wants) can add me on Steam, my username is Rheadax. Just, y'know, make sure I know who you are when you add me.

Adding!

Favorite wonders? Great Library is all or nothing, followed quickly by the Hanging Gardens. That population boost is wonderful so early in the game.

As far as actual civs go, I prefer playing a very tall Russia, which doesn't sound like it would lend itself to their play style, but it's such a generalist civ that it can excel at it. Quickly trailing them is Korea, followed by Venice because my gosh Venice is wonderful to play as.

And wow, you have me beat in hours. I...I need to rectify this.

We will definitely do some multiplayer. Sei plays as well, you know. >.> *cough cough*

I don't actually play, but my bf/drunk house cat does, and I just wanted to drop in and say that it is the funniest thing to hear someone yelling "Yess! Suck my missiles, Ghandi!" (paraphrased)

Salone 10-19-2015 05:18 PM

No no no he has reason to. Back in the day, original Civilization had an error with Ghandi. He was supposed to be set to the lowest nuke hostility, but he was set so low that it wasn't recognized and the game rounded up to the maximum setting. It was left in all the others as a joke about the first, but seriously? Screw that little man. First he brings missionaries. Then he brings ICBM's. Do not trust the little man.

Paging /u/Sei ....oh wait this isn't Reddit. xD

I see you've been playing a lot lately. Excellent. I suppose I should stop playing so many dating sims and play a game of civ again. I'm probably out of practice. And I need to crush you guys.

Great Library is eh. I mean, it's one of the best wonders, no contest. But I play mostly Immortal so it's pretty difficult to get. The best path is if I'm already starting pottery/calendar for luxes, but on the other hand salt starts lend themselves best to the necessary production without sacrificing early population. SEE? There's so much to lose, which is why I've come to love the wonders that the AI tends to ignore. The game totally changes in multiplayer though.

Salone 10-22-2015 01:58 PM

Oh yeah, I play mostly against friends and the occasional bot. You've probably got more skill than I do, as my friends tend to be...well, very passive. They're getting better though. But when you have humans, you can manipulate and lie and double cross! That's the fun bits, being able to strike up alliances and feuds that aren't solely based on someone coveting your lands and adopting Order instead of your native Freedom.

I just thought to myself, "Hey, I should reinstall Civ V!"

Opened up Steam, and...Civ V was already installed! Oh yeah, I keep good track of what's on my HDD.

It's been a long while since I've played that.

Fire it up! Build the Great Library! Don't trust Ghandi! Cleanse the world of those who would choose the Autocracy policy track instead of Freedom! Ban the luxury of those who oppose you!

Lucid: 10-22-2015 08:49 PM

Woo! We have four civ friends! That's enough for a small map, if we don't want those nasty AI stinking up our game. :3

I might have better micromanagement, but I still really suck at some things, like war. You're right though, that multiplayer is fantastic for double-crossing without getting nasty diplomatic penalties that screw you over for the whole game. Grrrr. AI diplomacy sucks.

Salone 10-23-2015 12:46 PM

I've been trying to beat the AI to the Great Library on Deity. So far...it's been impossible. I can get within 10 turns. But I will keep trying! And we should totally plan a staff Civ V game. You have all the expansions, yes?

Lucid: 10-24-2015 12:51 AM

I think there's like one map pack I don't have, but the simple solution is to not use that map pack. :P

The only way I know of to get Great Library on Deity is to be Babylon, rush Writing and Mining, and plant your free Great Scientist to quick-chop some forest to give you a big production boost while building. I've never actually tried it myself so I don't know how close it is. Great Library on Deity/Quick is something like turn 20-25 though. @.@ I think the highest difficulty I try for it is King, and even then sometimes I have something else distracting me.

The last two times I've randomed a civ I've gotten Shaka. T_T I suck at war so bad why can't I get a tall peaceful civ. Speaking of which, I've remembered that the Aztecs and the Inca are some of my favorites, or at least the ones I've chosen to play the most. I'm fairly fond of China too.

Salone 10-25-2015 01:55 PM

Shaka. Shaka. Shaaaakaaaaa.

Let me tell you how much I hate Shaka.

I hate him this much. Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much.

Seriously, he is constantly aggressive. He can't seem to take a single city, but he is always on the warpath. Dude needs to learn to chill and sit back. The Huns learned. The Mongols learned. Why can't the Zulus learn? He's just...annoying.

And so far my record is turn 23 for the Great Library on Quick, but that was also either on Prince or King. Definitely had some favorable start positions.

Lucid: 10-26-2015 01:49 AM

Turn 23 is probably almost quick enough to snag it on Deity, depending on who your opponents are. Maybe you'll be against Attila, Shaka, Genghis Kahn, Montezuma, and Alex. They'll let you build the Great Library. Then they'll gangbang all your cities. :D

I don't hate Shaka as much as I hate Alex. >:U You can pay Shaka to go to war with someone else, and he'll probably be your friend after. But Alex. Oh man, he is the worst neighbor ever. He'll take your dirty bribe money, forward settle you, and then attack you anyway.

I need to practice my expansion. I am very hesitant to expand and usually don't even do a second city until well in to the mid game, around turn 100 on standard. I usually go very, very tall and I find it hard to optimize a wide playthrough. Suck as China and Spain so bad.

Lucid: 10-30-2015 08:24 PM

I never play standard (unless I get a fun map save from someone), but I think by turn 100 on quick you are probably supposed to have 4 cities and National College built. It's been a while since I roamed the reddit threads for proper builds though.

I practiced expanding by playing on a huge map and deleting half of the opponents. It's way easier to expand on an 8 person map when there's only 4 civs there to take up space.

My problem becomes, do I build settlers, or do I build archers? I can't seem to balance both. T_T

Salone 11-02-2015 04:36 AM

Archers? I usually just buy those. My armies are usually bought in the beginning while I work on building improvements and such. Then again, I think we're on very different playing fields.

Lucid: 11-02-2015 04:36 PM

Bought.....what, you mean you have actual gold in the beginning? o.O lol I don''t even remember if gold generation changes based on difficulty level. I usually have a hard time with gold until I get some coastal cities with lucrative trade routes up, because I'm bad at remembering land trade routes. xD

Salone 11-03-2015 08:14 PM

It doesn't change, but I am incredibly economy minded. I generally make enough to hard purchase a much needed building or unit in a pinch if need be. Slow expansion but strong buildup and purchasing power. Venice is generally where I shine the most like that.

Lucid: 11-04-2015 04:25 PM

Venice was one of the first civs I played, and the first (only? I don't remember) win I ever got on Deity. And I DIDN'T CHEESE THAT WIN I SWEAR I had the proper number of civs on the map and I even went to war three whole times! It was just...an archipelago map...so I had my own landmass....and lots of sea trade routes....

For the most part I get to that financial point where I can buy a single key unit/building by the Renaissance era, and by industrial I can hopefully kick-start each new city by buying a monument, library, and workshop (as long as I'm not putting down cities like crazy).

Salone 11-07-2015 08:46 PM

I generally play on Prince/King and with other people over AI, but my economy usually stays golden. Most likely is a star bias thing, as Russia tends to have tundra and hills, which lends itself to gold/silver/gems and furs. My Korean economy is weakest until I can build tradeposts. Tradeposts are a lifesaver with them.

Lucid: 11-09-2015 01:33 AM

Yeah, makes sense. Since I random most of the time, I don't automatically get gold-rich starts by virtue of my civ. Also, sometimes I just reroll until I get a sick desert start with tons of river hills for desert folklore/petra. Who can resist that sweet combo.

Mmmm, I used to build trade posts EVERYWHERE all the time, since the automated workers did it so it must be good right? But then I learned that they're not super efficient and now I only put them in every jungle tile or on yucky tundra or desert.
