"I know, I wouldn't want to be her when they find her," he smirked, "You don't just quit around here, ya'know?" he chuckled. "Now, any particular one you're interested?"
Raven half-chuckled and wrung his hands again as if he was imagining that happening to himself to cover up for his lack of enthusiasm. So he picked one of the ones he knew had to be like the rings Laurel had been dealing in.
The dealer thanked him for his business. Once he left the dealer, Frei reappeared at his side and looked at the rings. "Good picks," she said blankly.
Raven put them in his pocket. "... Are we done yet?" he asked quietly. He seemed a little bit shaken by that last encounter.
Frei nodded, "We are. Snow and Blaze will search more." Frei's eyes wondered over to the left and she stopped, "I'll be right back, don't move," she told him before walking quickly off to the left.
Raven stayed put, doing his best to remain inconspicuous.
Frei came back carrying something in her arms. Upon further inspection, it looked like a small cat. Some sort of tiny black cat.
Raven blinked, looking back and forth between Frei and the cat.
"It's a newborn panther," Frei stated blankly before turning towards the door again.
Raven raised his eyebrows a little before following after Frei.
"We don't know... what mental state Laurel will be in. I thought this might help," she managed to explain to Raven quietly, "Clearly, she feels betrayed."
Raven nodded a little, trying to remain emotionally detached until they got far away from this place.
Frei and Raven exited the building without problems. Quickly they returned back to their room and Frei got some milk out for the cat.
Snow was still snooping around. |
Blaze was still scouting. But it looked like it would be a quiet night.
"I think... James must have said something," Frei whispered to Raven as she rubbed the kitten's head, "from inside the infirmary."
"... What could he possibly have said?" Raven asked as he emptied the contents of his pockets and put on something more comfortable.
"Think, Raven," Frei said quietly, "Who was passed out in the infirmary with him?"
"... He said something about Nic?" Raven guessed, not following Frei's train of thought. "What could he possibly say about him that would make Laurel react like that?"
Frei stared at Raven blankly, "... You don't know..." she mused before sighing and putting a hand on her forehead, "James's 'gift' is mimicry. He can mimic any sound he hears, even voices. Both Yue and Nic were in that infirmary. Imagine what he could have said using their voices. I don't want to believe he'd do something like that... but..."
Raven was still hung up that he could mimic other people's voices. There was no telling the amount of harm he could do with that.
Frei was silent, rubbing the cat's head as Raven thought through what she had told him.
After awhile he laid back on the bed with a big sigh.
Frei actually chuckled dryly.
Snow eventually called it a night and slipped away back to the room. |
"... I need to con some other normal person into this family," Raven decided.
Blaze was the last to return. The Yin Long had laid low tonight. |
Frei looked confused, "Normal?" she asked.
Snow was taking her boots off in the entryway of their room, "Normal people are bores. No offense, Raven," she shouted into their room. |
"Normal people are interesting to other normal people," Raven clarified.
Frei stilled looked confused, "You're... normal?" she asked quietly. Snow laughed and patted Frei on the head as she walked past to her bag.
"More-so than the rest of you," Raven answered, being vague on purpose. He was still sprawled out on the bed.
"Normal is conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected," Frei stated, "... you are not typical, nor to you conform to standards. Therefore, you are not 'normal.'"
"You tell him, Frei!" Snow praised as she slipped out of her pants. |
Raven didn't bother to argue against Frei.
Snow waited until Blaze made it back, "So, what did you buy Raven?" she asked.
Frei continued to pet the cat. |
Raven pointed to the rings on the counter, not getting up.
Snow looked the rings over, "Do you think the old gang she smuggled for might have grabbed her?" she asked. "Everyone seems to know that 'Auroral' is back. I hope that the Yin Long doesn't put two and two together and figure out that Auroral is Laurel..." she sighed.
Blaze didn't comment. Raven rubbed his head a little.
Snow looked at Blaze, "Seeing any of the Yin Lang there?"
"... No one unexpected," Blaze replied.
Snow nodded, "If we assume... her old gang caught her. Where should we look first?" she asked Blaze, "I'm not familiar with the Chicago area."
Blaze thought about it a little while before suggesting some bars where the customers were notoriously talkative. "The Yin Long are bound to be there though," she noted.
Snow sighed, "Then... you shouldn't come with us." She glanced over at Raven, "Can you handle another go?" she asked.
Raven ran a hand through his hair. "... I don't know," he said honestly with a sigh. "But time is of the essence, right? I'll do it for Laurel."
