Don chuckles and takes off at a fast but light pace, going along the wall of the property. "So, what do you do at your job? I figured we could talk about our work a bit while we get our exercise. Do you like working there? Are the people nice?"
He's pretty curious, he himself just worked a simple job in a hardware store taking care of putting the stock out and organizing the inventory and tracking it all. |
Vincent just follows after him. "I work the grill." He says simply. "Though not always. We kind of go where ever needed...unless you're working registers...then you get to stay there." He shrugs a bit. "It's alright...my coworkers, minus one or two are pretty awesome...some customers...well, not so much. But I've never had to deal with a horror story one so I'll just assume it's a bad day." He shrugs again. "What about you, where you work?"
"Ah, customer service can be a nightmare of a job. Glad that you haven't had any bad experiences yet. As for me I work at a local hardware store, its not a big chain one, its a family run business. I put the stock up on the shelves, organize the inventory and log the inventory and transactions. I usually work eight hour shifts on the weekends, during the work a few four hour ones." They jog for a few laps before Don slows down so that they both can pause for a moment and have a drink of water.
"All jobs are customer service. All of them. Just some...you have to do more than others." Vincent doesn't hate his job, though some days? The place could burn and he would be happy. He nods a bit. "They're lucky they still exist...Wal-Mart used to go send employees to look at prices and lower theirs until the place went out of business. I don't think they do that anymore really....well, the savings catcher, but that's it." He's rambling a bit. "But it doesn't sound like it would be too bad really." Where Don works.
"Yeah, that's one of the dumb things some companies do, and the other is jack up their prices for inferior products and such. And my job is alright until I get a customer asking me about a product and then saying I don't know anything about it and wanting to talk to whoever is the head of the department only to have the head tell them the same thing. Doing business is kind of like a catch twenty-two. You either do good for your customers/employees or do good profit wise, which could depend on the other two. It's really hard to get things just right to make money and have everyone satisfied so people tend to just make as much money as possible and not care about others. That's why with a small business where I work they are more concerned of keeping good employees and customers while still making money. We don't do a price match like some places only because we know that stuff can be expensive for the company to get, but we also have really good customer service as well." Taking another mouthful from the water bottle he starts up jogging again. "Will you be able to jog every morning or no?"
"That's what they did once other places shut down." Vincent says, talking about Wal-Mart. "That happens. Sometimes an employee may not know, may not, but most times, that is not the case. Usually they know more than the customer. I like when places are willing to work with you. Some places won't take back a hammer that broke easily, and other places will take it back once...come back too much like that and they'll wonder what you're doing to the things." He says snorting a bit. "Customer service matters a lot if you're competing against chain stores." He shakes his head a bit. "I don't know. If I feel like my legs are trying to kill me later, probably not." He says, snorting a bit.
"Yeah, if anything is not in the condition it was in when it left for the most part we don't accept it back. I know some places don't check like they should and some items end up being returned when they are broken and such. So maybe every other day for you then." Don chuckles softly, knowing how it feels to just start jogging and stuff since he didn't start until middle school. Finishing their lap he leads them back to the house, giving the girls plenty of water to drink while he gets a towel for him and Vincent to wipe their faces.
"I think if they can prove, somehow, that it's due to whoever made it messing up like using crappy material, a place should take it back and then complain to the company they got it from...but have a thing to keep up with who returns what, you know? If this guy is trying to return a hammer ever week or month, that's not bad workmanship...that's something else." He says. He nods a bit. "I'm not a runner unless something is chasing me." He says, snorting a bit. He just finds a seat when they get back to the house.
"Well, there's some legal stuff involved with that because we'd have to keep track of credit cards and everything, and there's been a lot of identity thefts because of this. Not particularly at our store because its just a single store, but it has happened at the big chain ones." Stretching a bit he heads back inside, holding the door open for Vincent, "Coming in?"
Going over to the sink he cleans out both of the water bottles and refills with with fresh water, sticking them back in the fridge and moving the older bottles to the front. "You should probably get ready for work, I'll quickly make something myself to have for lunch since you don't need to worry about it." |
"Receipts....like Walmart does almost...if you have a receipt they'll take it back....and if you don't, ID...and sometimes even when you do have it, I think they want your ID? Not sure." Vincent rarely returns things. He just pads after Don. "I hear theives are focusing more on ATMs and stuff now." He shrugs a bit. "Yeah, I'll be back in a moment." He says before heading to his room and getting changed into the uniform.
Well waiting for Vincent to get ready Don quickly throws together a lunch for himself, which consists of a container of juice and an peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He grabs a light weight long sleeve shirt, quickly pulling off the sweat shirt and pants. Grabbing some jeans he quickly pulls those on and buckles them, then grabs a shirt to quickly throw on. At his job they don't really have a strict dress code or anything, as long as they don't look like slobs.
Vincent comes back down shortly after putting his hair up in a small pony tail. He just flops down on a chair, waiting for Don. He kind of doesn't want to go to work, but he does appreciate money a bit, so he'll go. He only misses when he feels like he's going to die or something.
Don quickly hurries down stairs, shoving his wallet into his pocket, "Alright, let's roll." He leads Vincent to the garage after making sure the house is locked up and everything and that the girls have plenty of water. "You're going to have to give me directions on how to get to your job. I have a vague idea where its at since you mentioned the Walmart, but I just want to make sure you're not late or anything." Backing out of the garage he pulls out onto the road and starts heading back into town.
Vincent just pads after him. "I'm the only one who shows up on time, so if they say something about me being later one single time, it will not be pleasant." He says. "But, of course I'll give you directions." He doesn't like being lost or anywhere near it. He doesn't like late either, but they better excuse one time considering how the others have been late before. He's ranting in his head.
"Alright then." Following Vincent's direction he gets him to his job just a few minutes before his shift starts. "I'll swing by and at least order a drink or something while I wait for you to get finished, and maybe a snack depending on how hungry I am. Do you want anything in particular for dinner or just whatever we've got in the fridge?"
Vincent just kind of watches the world go by as Don drives. He nods a bit. "Well, I'll be here when you get off." Where else would he be anyway? "Nah, just food. That's my only stipulation." He says before snorting a bit. He then gets out of the car. "I'll see you later then." He says before heading inside.
He waves bye to Vincent, then shifts gear and drives off to his job. When he gets there he has some paper work to get through with organizing the shipments, which takes him a couple hours. Once he's he starts stocking some of the new items that came in. Several customers ask him questions as he's working, pointing them to what they need or are looking for.
Finally his shift is over and he heads over to the diner that Vincent works at, being seated at a small table. He looks over the menu for something small to eat, not really wanting to get anything too big since they'd be having dinner later after Vincent gets off. |
Vincent waves back before going to his job. He wishes he wasn't at the bottom of the totem pole...maybe he wouldn't be so stressed. Sometimes it seems like he's the only one working, but it has to be his imagination. That's the one thing that keeps him going on the bad days at least....and the thought that his shift has to end eventually.
At some point, he ends up, finally, getting off of work and he just heads for Don. "I'm ready if you're ready to go." Part of him really just wants to sleep at the moment, but that will screw up his sleep schedule completely and he knows it. |
"Alright then, I'll just leave the money on the counter for what I ordered." Making sure his server sees where he puts the money he leaves enough to cover what he got and a decent tip. "Well, I was thinking of getting some chicken, soft tacos and a few other things for toppings and stuff. This why dinner will be quick and easy for us since its only two of us tonight. And anything left over meat wise I can use for making food for the girls." Unlocking the car he slides in, making sure Vincent buckles up while he's buckling himself up before turning on the car and heading to the store.
Vincent nods a bit. "Plenty of people do that." And if they don't leave enough for the bill, they get the stink eye from there on. "Chicken tacos?" He asks, following after Don to the car, sliding in and buckling up. He's never made chicken tacos. He usually sticks with the tradtional beef tacos, but that's just him.
"Yeah, I figured we could chop it up, fry it up so its a little golden in the pan. Chicken and sour cream is some of the best stuff you can combine together, whether the chicken is dry or not. Some companies even make seasoning packets that go into the sour cream so it can be used as a sauce instead of adding in your own seasoning." He pulls into the parking lot and hops out. Going to the trunk he opens it up and pulls out some reusable cloth bags. Once Vincent closes his door Don locks it up.
"Not to mention I can dice up the tomatoes and onions, maybe a few other things. What do you like on your tacos?" |
Vincent nods a bit, his stomach gurgling at the idea. "That sounds really tasty." He says before getting out of the car with don, closing the door. He barely got to eat at work. He was almost tempted to mess up orders to eat. But he doesn't like doing that at all. "Ah...I like cheese. That's the main thing. It needs cheese." He loves cheese.
"Any preference on cheese, like cheddar, mozzarella or just grab a mixed bag for something like pizza?" He leads Vincent to the non-perishable foods first, that way it gives them time to decide on the ones that are perishable and not worry about them spoiling. Grabbing from the shelf and putting in a little hand basket he picked up on the way in he puts the seasoning packets in and the soft taco shells.
"We should probably have something on the side with more veggies in it, how about a casserole? I can make a pretty good broccoli one with cheese." |
"Nah, no preference really, just lots of cheese." Vincent says, snorting a bit. He just pads after him. "You want me to carry that?" He asks about the basket. "Does it have rice in it?" He asks about the casserole. A lot of recipes of casseroles have rice in them. And the ones he has made are pretty good.
He grabs a package of mixed cheese that's already shredded, normally he would shred it himself but Vincent looked tired and he figured the faster the food was made the better.
"Oh, sure, if you want to." Holding out the basket to Vincent he lets him take it, picking up bread crumbs as he makes his way down the aisle. "Naw, I use a mix of bread crumbs and fried onion strings. The onion strings are mixed in and the bread crumbs sprinkled on top. I still have some onion strings at home but we're getting a bit low on bread crumbs. If I had of decided about this sooner I would have just made more bread crumbs. Tastes better and a bit healthier too." |
Vincent is trying to hide the fact that he's tired, but he's not very good at it obviously. He just takes the basket, padding after Don. "Onions are always good." Though he's never had that kind of casserole with that...usually it's rice, not that he's complaining. "Every time I've needed bread crumbs, I would just toast the bread and break it up." It worked well enough for him at least.
"Well, bread is also something I'll have to get soon, but I need it for work. Not to mention you're probably tired from work and I don't want to keep you up too long since you'll need to rest." He grabs some bread crumbs, grabbing a brand he knows to be decent. "So now to get the toppings, starting with produce. Any preference with your toppings? Like do you like peppers, onions, lettuce or do you want something else to go on top like beans?" Half tempted to take the basket back from Vincent Don leads them to the produce section to look over what's there.
"Ah...okay...just had to suggest it since it is an option..." Vincent shrugs a bit. "I am tired." He says before yawning a bit. "But I can stay awake if needed." Food is more important than sleep right now. "Long as it has cheese, I'll be okay with almost anything else on top." He says, he's not too picky on his food as long as it doesn't look deadly. "What do you normally put on it?" He asks.
"Well, I can just let you take a nap while I get dinner ready then, I can see that you're tired. As for myself I usually put lettuce, tomatoes diced, onions diced, and raw peppers diced on mine with some cheese and sour cream. Anything other than those that you'd like? I already know you have this thing for cheese." He chuckles softly, finding it amusing how Vincent kept talking about cheese.
"Mmm...nap." Yes, Vincent likes that idea. "Naps are the best." And sometimes he doesn't take hours long naps. "Other than more cheese?" He says, chuckling a bit. "Nothing I can think of to tell the truth." He says, shrugging a bit. "And I have a love for cheese. A great love for cheese." Cheese will never hurt him beyond clogging his arteries.
Don chuckles as he grabs the last few things they need and heads over to the registers to pay.
"Does that love for cheese also go for cheesecake or no? Maybe after the test I'll try making one for us if you want. We're both kind of stressing out over that anyways." Grabbing the bags he leads them back to the car, putting the groceries in the trunk. |
Vincent just pads after him. "Cheesecake might be better than cheese. Might be, but it technically contains cheese." He doesn't really consider cream cheese as a cheese, but it's called it. "Cheesecake is delicious and to not like it might just be blasphemy." He says, helping him with the groceries.
Don just chuckles softly, thinking that Vincent being tired is getting to his head. After closing the trunk he gets in the car and starts it up. Once Vincent is settled in he drives off heading back home.
"You know, I'm surprised you don't know how to cook a bunch of different things. Most people I talk to that live on their own make their own meals and usually a wide variety of meals too. They even say that making meals fresh is cheaper usually as well." |
Vincent just gets in the car, buckling up. "Well, the problem is that...ramen and peanut butter are really cheap and I can survive off of them. And the rest of my money can go to school and other things. And sometimes I just don't want to cook. I love spaghetti though. Really tasty." He says simply. "And one to two tv dinners is a meal...that's 2 dollars. That's really cheap. Not good for you, but cheap."
"Well, true. Though you might be lacking in some nutrients because of that way of eating. I'll be sure you get good food while you stay with us." He rolls into the garage, closing it behind them and shutting off the car. Since there's not much he grabs all of the bags.
"Can you get the door for me?" He tells him the pass code for getting in since they are the only ones there and they need to disable the alarm. |
"I never said it would be good, just that you could survive off of it." Vincent says simply. "Which is more important when you have no money really." He says simply.
He nods a bit before hurrying to the door, putting the passcode and opening it and all, holding it open for him. |
"Thanks, and valid point there." He sets the bags down on the counter and gets to work getting what he needs to start cooking. Spreading the items out on the counter he sorts out the food and starts chopping up the chicken, then throws them in the pan to fry them up.
"I think you'll like this, its fairly easy to make." |
"What do you want me to do to help?" Vincent asks. He believes in at least trying to help cook, especially if the other bought all the ingredients and everything. "Most things aren't hard to make...just I get tired and lazy." HE says, chuckling a bit sheepishly.
"Well, you can cut up the toppings, just be sure not to cut yourself or anything. If you start getting really sleepy just tale a nap until I'm done." Don would rather Vincent rest, but he wasn't going to tell him no if he wanted to do something. With the chicken finished he sets the pan to the side and seasons it with some spices to give it more flavor.
"How's the toppings coming along?" |
"I'm not gonna cut myself, at least not badly." Vincent hasn't chopped off a finger yet at least. He just nods a bit. He'll probably stay up either way, he's used to having to pull long nights either working or working and doing homework. "They look chopped up mostly to me." He can do it fast as long as the knife is sharp.
