The door opened slowly, "Frei? You in-?" Wolfe stopped in the doorway, blinking at the pair of them. Frei was asleep already at Raven's side.
Raven motioned for Wolfe to be quiet.
Wolfe blinked again as he walked closer and peered at Frei. He seemed surprised.
Raven moved his arm slightly to see how asleep Frei was.
She was out cold.
Wolfe regarded Raven for a moment before dismissing a thought. |
Raven was still focusing on Frei as he shifted her so she'd be easy to pick up if Wolfe wanted to move her.
Wolfe shook his head and after a moment, took a seat on the opposite side of Frei. "What did she want to watch?" he asked quietly.
Raven handed him the movie case.
Wolfe looked at it before sighing, "It must be tigers again," he muttered.
"... Mice," Raven corrected quietly.
Wolfe blinked, "Mice too?" he sighed, "She's been alone for too long." He reached over and picked up one of her hands. The nails were bitten back into stubs.
Raven didn't say anything.
Wolfe looked at Raven for a long moment, "You gained her trust quickly," he noted.
Raven shrugged a little. "The ladies like me," he replied.
Wolfe blinked before slowly raising one eyebrow, "You're safe I suppose," he reasoned.
"The word you were looking for is 'handsome,'" Raven joked.
Wolfe's eyebrow raised higher, "You?" he asked, seemingly genuinely surprised.
"Surprisingly, most women like these 'demon' eyes," Raven replied.
Wolfe shook his head a little, "Most women have bad taste," he noted.
"Ouch," Raven replied nonchalantly.
Wolfe shrugged and leaned back on the couch. He seemed to relax a little, a first in front of Raven. "I feel like I'm being selfish," he said quietly after a moment.
Raven remained silent.
"I... don't understand why you're staying," Wolfe explained quietly, "You know... what I am. Frei told you I kidnapped a child, correct?"
Raven was quiet for a long time. Then finally he answered, "This is where I should be right now."
Wolfe shook his head a little, "I don't understand you," he replied, "You don't seem to use logic at all."
"Sure you're genetically engineered and all," Raven replied, "but I don't get why you seem bent on denying that you're still human."
Wolfe was silent for awhile. "... Because..." he finally replied, "I can't be."
"Why not?" Raven asked.
Wolfe stared at the hands in his lap, "Human's... make mistakes. They have weaknesses. I can afford neither," he tried to explain after a moment.
"... My mom would disagree," Raven noted. "She'd say a leader makes lots of mistakes; just not the same one twice. Besides, according to Pepper, you already messed up royally by saving me."
Wolfe shook his head, "We're not... a team, Raven," he said somberly, "We were never designed to work together. If there is no leader, we will fall apart. In order to find the lab, we have to stay together but that will only work as long as I remain on top. I'm not... a leader in the traditional sense," he explained, rubbing his hands together a little, "I'm an icon, an ideal... a perfect image that they follow. The minute I start making mistakes, we will break apart. To find the lab, I must be emotionless, I must be purely... war-minded. That's the only way... but... with you..." he sighed a little, rubbing his forehead with his hand.
"... Well, with the way news spreads in this place, everyone knew yesterday," Raven replied. "... So show them you can adapt. That you can be in both worlds. The last thing I want to do is cause you trouble... but, since this is new, I'll just let you know that this won't just go away. The sooner you accept that the better."
"You... don't get it, Raven," Wolfe muttered, "I don't think I can be in both worlds."
Raven was silent for awhile. "Then what..?" he asked. "... Are you trying to tell me to leave?"
"No," Wolfe replied a bit too quickly. "... yes?" He grunted, "I don't know..."
Raven didn't say anything for awhile. "I guess I'll stick around until you figure it out," he decided. "... I don't want you to feel like I'm expecting anything more out of you," he continued after a moment. "I know how important finding the lab is to you. So keep focusing on that. On the mean time, I'll try to stay out of trouble. But if Frei insists on going down the water slides again, I can't guarantee anything."
Wolfe looked over at Raven, managing a small smile. It was weird to see a smile on his face, it looked good on him. He flicked his pink hair as he shook his head, "You... got Frei on a water slide?" he asked.
Raven smirked a little. "I convinced her to get her feet wet and next thing I knew she insisted on trying the water slide," he explained.
Wolfe rested his chin on his fist and his elbow on his knee. He continued to look at Raven, "You really are... unique," he muttered.
"Careful now," Raven replied smoothly. "That could be mistaken as a complement."
