Fin swallowed a little. He was afraid of Wolfe and terrified that him choosing to take some space had caused this. His feet remained firmly planted.
Wolfe watched Fin for a moment before shaking his head, "You did not cause this, boy," he said quietly, "She knew forming an attachment to you might bring this about. I think... it's time you learned the truth about Frei's condition," he told Fin, gesturing to a chair by Fin.
Fin swallowed again before slowly walking over to the chair and sitting down.
"Frei... Evelyn Frei is the product of brain experimentation. You've undoubtably seen her do feats that seem unimaginable to us. The changes in her brain allow her mind to use sixty percent of it's full capacity while ours can only use ten. No one can fully understand or relate to her, Fin," Wolfe explained quietly.
"She thinks and reasons differently than the rest of us but that does not mean she does not have emotions. In fact, her emotions are much stronger than ours. So much stronger that I've had to train her to control them. If she doesn't, if she lets them run loose, she overwhelms herself and gets fevers and migraines. You've experienced this too, I presume. She can get delusional; when her mind overworks itself she starts to see things that are not there." He sighed heavily, "The reason... I was so wary of your interest in her was not only me being protective of her. I wasn't sure... I'm still not sure... if she can handle such heavy emotions. Or if you can handle her. She's starting to really like you and this is the product," Wolfe stated, pushing some of her hair out of her eyes. |
Fin was dumbstruck. It wasn't clear if he had absorbed all of it or any of it. After a little while his hands started to shake. Wolfe was wrong; it was all his fault.
Wolfe grunted a little as he stood and walked over to Fin. He crouched down in front of him, "Seraphim," he said solemnly, "It's not your fault."
Fin wouldn't meet Wolfe's eyes. Even if it wasn't, he didn't have a clue what to do.
"Seraphim," Wolfe continued quietly, "Knowing this, do your feelings for Frei remain?"
Fin was quiet for awhile, sorting through his thoughts. "Would it be better if they didn't?" he asked quietly.
"I don't know," Wolfe admitted honestly, "there is the chance that your feelings could help her, but there is always the risk that these reactions will keep escalating." Wolfe glances back at Frei who was shifting again, "The choice is yours."
Fin was starting to get stressed out, not taking this lightly. He couldn't arrive at a decision yet.
Wolfe put a hand on Fin's shoulder, "Take some time to think it over," he consoled, "Frei's recovering but she'll be out for a few more days."
Fin flinched a little as Wolfe touched him, but remained silent.
Wolfe sighed a little, "You can discuss this with Raven, he'll provide council for you." Raven was better at this sort of thing...
Fin stayed where he was for a long time before nodding a little and moving to stand.
Wolfe nodded back and went back to Frei.
