Nic shook his head.
After a few more moments, Raven put down the tablet to look at Frei. |
"Alright." Laurel replied, giving Nic's hand once final squeeze before letting go, "Night then." she nodded as she turned towards the door.
Frei's expression didn't change but the worry was still in her eyes. "... frogs are fragile..." she suddenly whispered, sounding much closer to the actual child that she was. |
Nic nodded, letting her go as he turned his attention back to his computer.
Raven sighed a little. "... It's late," he noted. "Perhaps if you get some sleep, we could go down the water slide a few times tomorrow." |
Frei blinked once and instantly any sense of the child was gone, "I don't swim." she said blankly before turning to leave.
"Not you too," Raven complained a little. "Is it because you haven't learned or for some other reason?" he asked.
Frei paused, "Wolfe doesn't." she stated.
"Wolfe doesn't do a lot of fun things," Raven replied.
Frei suddenly looked angry, "Wolfe has heavy responsibilities. He doesn't have time to do the things he likes, that's not his fault. And regardless, swimming is not fun to him." she said defensively.
Raven raised his hands a little. "And that's perfectly fine if swimming isn't fun for him. But is it fun for you?"
"I... don't know." she admitted after a moment, "Rui doesn't goes near it so I don't. Water was his punishment; if he ever fell in he'd drown within minutes. He protects me so I only go where he goes." she explained with a blank voice that had a bit of edge to it.
Raven was silent for a long moment. "... Would you like to try?" he asked gently. "I would make sure nothing bad would happen."
Frei watched Raven for a long moment then slowly she nodded, eyes remaining a bit cautious.
Raven nodded. "Alright then," he said. "Get some sleep and find me tomorrow when you're ready."
Frei nodded and turned, running into Laurel on her way out. "Oh." Laurel said with a smile as she saw Raven, "You're up."
Raven nodded.
So Laurel invited herself inside, walking over and sitting on the bed which was just big enough for her to fit beside Raven. "I might have to break up with you." she said sadly as she pulled the blanket over herself as well.
Instantly, Raven pulled a dramatic performance out of his back pocket. He wasn't great, but he was pretty good. "Don't say things like that!" voice filled with fake anguish. "You can't let them get you down. All we need is each other!" ... Maybe he had picked up a few tips from James.
Laurel smirked before putting on an anguish look as well, "It just... wasn't meant to be... the stars were out of line, fate has different plans. We can't fight it." she stated with a clenched fist, "But no matter where we go I will always love you!" she stated in a rather cheesy voice before bursting out in a fit of laughter as she couldn't keep it together anymore.
As Laurel burst out into laughter, Raven threw his arms around her broke out into fake sobs.
Raven's sobbing only made Laurel giggle harder, so much so that she started tearing up. She tried to speak but couldn't get anything through her laughter.
After awhile Raven stopped and started laughing too.
Laurel turned in his arms, grinning at him as she kissed his cheek, "Crust..." she murmured as she giggled, "I'll always need my fake boyfriend... and since
Raven laughed a little harder for a moment before getting a hold of himself and wiping a tear out of his eye. "... Wait, what?" he asked, tone more serious now as he realized what she had meant to imply.
Laurel continued to grin at Raven, "I love Nic." she declared, still hugging Raven, "And he loves me back. But I don't think it would be two-timing to still love you." and after a moment she buried her face in his chest, "So I'm sleeping here." her muffled voice added.
Raven slowly shook his head and patted Laurel's head.
"I've..." Laurel sighed, still hiding her face, "been really stupid, huh? With my heart..."
Raven chose to remain silent as he put the blanket over her.
Laurel let the silence fall over then for a little while. "You're... feeling better?" she inquired softly.
Raven nodded. "You should get to sleep," he told her. "You've had a long day."
So Laurel tightened her grasp on Raven, still being careful not to hurt him. She nodded slowly as she found his heartbeat and started to drift off.
Raven stayed up for awhile longer, reading again after Laurel had fallen asleep. But eventually he fell asleep too.
They were awoken a bit early in the morning by a loud beep from the foot of the bed and a screen popped up. Laurel jumped a little, blinking her eyes as she lifted her head and stared blankly at the screen.
Raven let out a large yawn as he stretched before looking at the screen.
After a moments pause, Wolfe's head appeared on the screen. A brief wave of surprise swept across his usually collected features as he took both of them in. It was clear he was curious but said nothing. "... I have some news." he stated, still of bit distracted as he paused to collect his thoughts.
"Couldn't it have waited five more minutes?" Raven complained a little, enjoying Wolfe's surprise a little.
Wolfe paused again, "... I seem to be interrupting something. I apologize but this can't wait."
Laurel seemed to find her voice finally, "Oh!" she exclaimed, "We're not... we're not together! I was just sleeping here. Raven definitely likes men." she affirmed with a nod before pausing, "But actually, you might be Bi, huh?" she added, "That means you like men and women." she informed Wolfe helpfully. Wolfe did a better job at hiding his emotions but was there a tad of pink on his cheeks to match his hair? Maybe. Regardless, he cleared his throat a little, "Thank you, Laurel." he replied kindly but with a slightly raised eyebrow at Raven. |
Raven chuckled a little. "Hey," he noted jokingly. "Who would have thought Wolfe, Laurel, and Nic would all have something in common?"
Wolfe blinked, it looked like he was trying to process Raven's words.
Laurel frowned slightly as well, "I'm not bi." she protested, "... at least, I don't think I am... I like Nic." she reminded him. Wolfe finally seemed to get it and snorted lightly, "With that logic we could all sleep with each other, swapping partners wouldn't be bad. Always someone fresh to go to. Three guys and one girl? That wouldn't be half bad for Laurel either." As always, it was hard to tell it he was serious or joking. Laurel blinked at him with innocent eyes. |
"Laurel still doesn't know," Raven tried to explain to Wolfe. "And Yue was joking about Nic being bi awhile ago... At least, I think she was joking. But Laurel and I barely fit here. And the guest beds aren't big enough for four. I guess we'll just have to use yours."
Slowly a very unexpected dirty smile grew on Wolfe's face, "The bed only has to be wide enough to accommodate two abreast." he reminded Raven. Laurel was completely lost and stayed out of the conversation with a sigh.
