After an hour, it looked like Raven was going to sleep for as long as they would allow him to.
Laurel wandered around for awhile, not acknowledging anyone. Eventually she ended up down by the motorcycles. She just stared at them for awhile before she suddenly mounted one.
Bee remained on Cong's bed, eventually falling asleep. The girls continued about their normal routine though as lunch rolled around Roselyn wanted to talk to Dan. |
Dan managed to wander back to her room and was sleeping when Roselyn came looking for her.
As dinner time the nurse gently roused Raven, "I need to look at your injuries." she said quietly with a smile.
Raven complained a little. "... Tell me that smell isn't me..." he muttered as he opened his eyes.
"No," the nurse reassured him with a chuckle, "You have a few visitors." Kama licked Raven's face as she started to sit up. Amela screeched from the top of his head.
Raven groaned again as he slowly got up. He double check to make sure Laurel was scarce before he let the nurse look at him. It was probably a very good thing too; he had bruised up rather nicely from the beating she had given him.
The nurse raised her eyebrows but didn't ask as she looked him over. "Alright, go ahead and lay back down." she said as she retrieved from medical cream. "This will sting a bit but does wondering with bruising." she explained.
Raven did as he was instructed. It seemed like he knew a thing or two about bruises, doing everything he could not to strain them.
The nurse did everything she could, "Just continue to rest for now, I'll have someone bring food in for you." she told him before sighing, "I've got to get another look at Laurel's hands." and headed for the door.
Raven nodded and put a blanket over himself before closing his eyes.
A bit later, Roselyn was knocking on Dan's door.
Dan got up a little grudgingly and went to the door.
Roselyn looked a little worried, "It's Laurel, you better follow me." she said quietly before taking off down that hallway.
Dan frowned and followed after Roselyn.
"The nurse couldn't find her anywhere." Roselyn explained while they walked, "So we traced her using she cameras to the underground motorcycle arena. We know where her bike is on the track but it's stopped." she sighed, sounded a little worried, "We thought we should come get you before heading out to find her."
Dan let out a sigh. "... I don't know how to ride," she admitted.
"You can sit behind someone." Roselyn shrugged as they entered the elevator to get below.
Dan didn't say anything else. She didn't really have much of a choice.
When they got down to the motorcycles, Roselyn walked with Dan over to the other girls. "Where is she?" she asked one of them.
The girl showed her a screen, pointing to the blinking green dot. "She hasn't moved." Roselyn whistled, "She's far out there..." she turned to Dan, "It should take us a good hour to reach her. We have to drive slower since we don't know the tunnels that well." she explained with a sigh. |
Dan sighed.
"You don't have to come... I suppose." Roselyn replied, "We just don't know what she's doing way out there. You don't get motion sick, do you?" she asked.
Dan shook her head. "... It's alright," she replied as she went to grab a helmet.
Once Dan was settled behind Roselyn, they took off. Two other girls on motorcycles went along with them. In a little under an hour their headlights shone on a stopped motorcycle. Laurel was squatting beside it, a few tools in her hand. She seemed to be fixing something. As they approached, she shielded her eyes from their headlights with her arm.
Roselyn frowned, "You break down out here?" she called to her. Laurel didn't respond. |
Dan didn't say anything as she got off the motorcycle.
"Could you turn those damn things off?" Laurel's voice snapped, thick with annoyance, "Or at least turn them the other way."
Roselyn blinked but nodded, turning hers off and motioning the other's to turn so their lights weren't directly on Laurel. "You alright?" she asked, getting off with Dan and stepping closer. Laurel moved her arm and snorted at her, "Do I look alright to you?" She looked a bit beat up and covered in mud. The motorcycle didn't look any better. |
Dan didn't say anything, letting Roselyn handle it.
Roselyn walked closer, "Did you fall?" she asked and Laurel flashed her a glare, "I did not fall." she retorted, "The extension broke and I lost control of the bike." she paused a moment, standing and looking down at the bike. "I suppose I'm lucky I didn't go crashing into a wall." she snorted with a small smirk.
Roselyn swallowed, "Laurel?" Laurel turned to look at her, "What?" she asked a little harshly. "What's wrong?" Roselyn tried quietly. "Wrong? Nothing's wrong." Laurel replied, "I've just decided I won't fall back into that pit." "Pit?" Roselyn asked but she was ignored as Laurel looked back at her bike. |
Dan remained silent, but she seemed to at least understand somewhat.
Laurel tweaked a few more things then climbed on and tried it. The engine started. Laurel glanced over her shoulder, looking at Dan. "You coming?" she asked bluntly, "Or are you riding with them all the way back." There was a clear condescending tone in her voice.
Dan glanced at everyone else before grabbing her helmet and walking over to Laurel.
The other women clearly didn't know what to do. They let them go with shocked silence. Laurel waited until Dan was firmly seated on the back before taking off. It took less than a half-an-hour for Laurel to drive them back. She pulled to a stop with a sigh, almost regretfully.
Dan slowly got off and took off her helmet still not seeming too talkative.
Laurel stayed on the bike, hands gripping the handlebars then releasing, gripping then releasing. "I've figured it out, Dan." she said quietly.
Dan turned to Laurel, waiting for her to continue.
Suddenly Laurel let go of the bars and dismounted the bike. She turned to Dan with a placid smile, "There's no such thing as selfless love. And therefore," she paused, "real love cannot exist."
Dan blinked and then slowly a frown crossed her face. "How did you come to that conclusion?" she asked.
"People are naturally selfish." Laurel stated with a knowing smirk, "Everyone is only thinking about themselves... it's our instinct." she shrugged, "It is not possible to only care about another person and not about yourself. Love must be selfless to be real and since we can't be selfless, it must not exist." she elaborated as the moved towards the door, expecting Dan to follow.
Dan followed. After a moment Dan noted, "People tend to be selfish. But not always so. No one can be selfless all the time, and no one can be selfish all the time either. But selflessness exists. Sometimes its just hard to see."
Laurel glanced back at Dan, eyes hard to read. "You know..." she said quietly as they waited for the elevator, "my Dad was selfless once. He was kind and gentle-hearted before he was betrayed. Then he betrayed me and I'll betray someone else. It's a cycle, Dan, and it's better to stay out of it. Love is not real; it is false and it is an illusion. It will stab you in the back as soon as you let it in. It always does." The elevator was here and she stepped into it.
