Oh good lord! Ginger - I'm sorry!

Ginger 03-02-2014 03:04 AM

It really isn't as bad as it sounds thankfully, but it's still very cold in this house and the oven works really well heating the place, but it uses so much electricity compared to the space heaters, so I only turn it on for about 10 minutes at a time every so often when it gets really cold.

Kilala Mikal 03-02-2014 10:57 AM

Oh wow, Ginger. Do you have an extra blanket or sheet that you could drape over that broken window? It won't block it off, but it'll help to cut the draft. You could roll up a sheet and put it in front of the doors (if the bottoms are where most of the draft is coming through). That's what we do here in our house. Our house was built in the 50's and is really drafty (thanks to some poor rennovations). We keep a couple of random crocheted pieces (they were scrap yarns crocheted into pieces that just so happen to fit in front of the doors) at the doors. It keeps the cold air from getting under the doors. If your windows are drafty, you could take a towel and roll it up to use as a barrier there.

Of course, you probably already know most of this >.<' And I think I'm about to start rambling... >.>'

*ninja poofs to keep from rambling*

Angel Spirit Girl 03-02-2014 03:05 PM

I hope some heavy duty tape and cardboard or newspaper help with all the drafts, Ginger. <3

It is cold and snowing here.

Ginger 03-02-2014 04:34 PM

Kilala - The front door has a draft all the way around it. We've tried weatherstripping it on the outside, but the door won't close if we weatherstrip all the way around. So the only part with weatherstripping is the top. I've got a towel rolled up at the bottom of the other door, but the entrance door is trickier because we go in and out of the house. We don't have very many blankets but I'll look for heavy duty tape and cut some cardboard boxes, then cover the bottom part of the window with a small blanket folded in half at least. Last night got really cold, but thankfully our room stayed warm and we had 3 blankets on us.

Angel - Thank you :) I really hope it helps! It snowed here last night, maybe about an inch or two, so thankfully not too bad.

Espy 03-02-2014 04:47 PM

My roommate and I actually have to keep our window open when we;re in there -- yes, the heating is adjustable , but the doors aren't particularly great and the heating from the hallway seeps inside a lot. And we're on the highest floor, haha...

With the windows open, it doesn't actually get too cold, even when it's way below freezing -- there's more hot air going out than cold coming in.

If you have electrical tape or like...the sealing tape they use for faucets, those might work as makeshift weatherproofing.

Ginger 03-02-2014 07:06 PM

Espy - Thanks for the idea! I'll look for electrical tape.

I'm not wearing socks, but I'm wearing slippers and my feet and ankles are frozen. I have to keep wrapped in blankets and can't have any exposed skin because it's so cold in this house.

Angel Spirit Girl 03-02-2014 07:21 PM

Maybe roasting a turkey, or making some all day stew, would be a good excuse to run your oven and keep warm.

Ginger 03-03-2014 01:32 AM

Angel Spirit Girl - I was thinking the same haha. Actually, there is a full chicken in the freezer I could take out overnight and bake it in the oven tomorrow. xD

Quiet Man Cometh 03-03-2014 03:40 AM

Just a thought, but is your front door attached to a hallway or anything? It might help to section off parts of the house with hanging sheets or curtains or something to cut down on the drafts. Pulling curtains across glass windows will also help to retain some heat, since it's an extra layer it has to get through. Make like a little foyer in front of the door, so that when you open it the air hits the sheet or curtain instead of going all the way into the house.

Fauxreal 03-03-2014 03:59 AM

oh! Great idea Quiet!

Kilala Mikal 03-03-2014 06:30 AM

Is it sad that I wish there was a like button for Quiet's idea?

*spends entirely too much time of facebook...*

Fauxreal 03-03-2014 05:29 PM

Kilala - I have totally done that before. HAHA!

Angel Spirit Girl 03-03-2014 06:57 PM

If there are not enough bed sheets to do that with, you could try taping together sheets of newspaper.

Fauxreal 03-03-2014 08:48 PM

That's a thought. Thrift stores usually have some really cheep sheets and things.

Ginger 03-03-2014 09:56 PM

Very good idea, Quiet! The thing is, I don't think my boyfriend would go for the sheet thing because he grew up in a middle class family where everything in their house had to look perfect. I mean his mom would say their house was a mess if there was nothing but mail and newspaper on the kitchen table and a few petty little dishes in the sink. The front door enters into the kitchen by the way.

Fauxreal 03-04-2014 01:55 AM

He needs to suck it up you don't get a freaking cold!

Ginger 03-04-2014 02:43 AM

Well... we got the window done the best we could. There is still quite a draft coming from the doors and the bathroom.

Fauxreal 03-04-2014 02:17 PM

Door draft stoppers. Those are amazing!

Ginger 03-04-2014 03:18 PM

Our doors won't close if we use any kind of weatherstripping. The house is settled and the structure isn't even.

Fauxreal 03-05-2014 08:14 PM

It's not weather stripping! <3
https://www.google.com/search?q=Door...w=1600&bih=775

That is what I meant. We use them here - my mom made some.

Ginger 03-07-2014 06:02 PM

Oh wow those are really cute! Thanks for the link

Our draft is all the way around our doors, so they would only cover the bottom. But it would be better than nothing at least...

It warmed up here in the last couple of days and the house has been warmer since we wrapped the broken window as a whole in more tape and plastic. I've also got some cardboard over it and it is noticeably warmer in the house :) There hasn't been a high breeze, so the house should be warmer anyway.

I found little critters for my avatar :3

Angel Spirit Girl 03-07-2014 07:36 PM

Good to hear that you are managing to get things more snug in your house.

You do look like a cute pet sitter in that outfit.

Kilala Mikal 03-07-2014 08:12 PM

Glad to hear that it's getting warmer where you are.

Side note: I love your av right now, Ginger! I don't have the skill (or items right now) to pull off that wonderful rainbow combo. <3

Ginger 03-07-2014 09:20 PM

Haha thanks Angel <3 A very bubbly petsitter I'd be xD I love the little ducky. How have you been lately? I've been seeing you on and posting a little more often. Welcome back *huggles*

Kilal - I was going to make a simple outfit with very few items, but it didn't go according to plan lol. Thank you :) I love how you've layered your hair and eyes, and layered yourself a unique dress. I love the layering here.

Right now I am eating hot-as-heck Pizza Rolls and just burnt my lip. Hopefully it doesn't leave a mark.

Fauxreal 03-07-2014 09:48 PM

Kilala, from the items you do have - you have a great style. It always looks very sassy to me. <3

Ginger. snap. fo'real. <- my name! HA!

Angel Spirit Girl 03-07-2014 09:52 PM

*Huggles!* I'm good. Finally got a permanent job since I was hired by the cookie factory I was a temp at. Also, I had been busy with Valentine events earlier, and now am trying to do this event. I drop in every day to play the crane, but have not posted in a while before the event.

Sometimes simple outfits look way too plain. The changeable layering here is great. <3

Fauxreal 03-07-2014 10:53 PM

The layering system here is freaking amazing.

Kilala Mikal 03-08-2014 12:39 AM

Thanks Ginger. <3

And you should see some of my earlier avs, Faux. They were all sweet and adorable, lol. But that was before I found my preferred face combo. Most of the stuff I've gotten so far has been corsets, bras, and stockings, lol. My avs on here are the complete opposite of my wardrobe at home. It's nice to dress sexy, and my avs let me do that without having to worry about how I'd actually look irl in something like that. >.>' *I think I just shared a bit too much...*

Ginger 03-08-2014 01:07 AM

Faux - Haha it's funny you noticed that. I thought your username was pronounced "Fox-real"

Angel - I'm so glad to hear! Congrats on your permanent job <3 I went through a long phase of just signing in to play the crane game, but now users are a little more chatty through the event.

I agree with Faux, Kilal. I've always considered your avatars to be unique, and when I scroll down and see you avatar I can definitely tell it's yours. :)

I hope that's a good thing, lol. Mind if I ask what's definitive of my avs? ^_^'

Fauxreal 03-08-2014 02:13 AM

You tend you keep the same sort of facial items. Also, somehow - your avatars are a certain 'stand-up sassy', at least to me.

Kilala Mikal 03-08-2014 12:50 PM

^_^ Interesting. I feel kinda out of sorts with this av, lol. It's all bright and golden. Totally not my typical colors. And truth be told I'm surprised that I had enough items that went together to make it, lol.

Angel Spirit Girl 03-08-2014 12:54 PM

It was quite a while that I was without a permanent job - a little over two and a half years.

Yup. I have been off on other avi forums, but would stop by just to play the crane game. Now that there is finally an event, I have a reason to post a bunch.

I like cute and pretty outfits for my avatars.

Fauxreal 03-08-2014 04:26 PM

Kilala, you aren't gold - you are silver? Maybe I missed that one.

I'm without a job for at least a year more.

Ginger 03-08-2014 04:53 PM

Kilala - You have a specific way you like your face and hair to look. The layering is always clean and the hair is fresh and sassy, as Faux mentioned c:

Angel - Yeah I know those feels. It took me 2 1/2 years to get a job out of high school. Got my driver's license after my boyfriend helped me buy a car and get settled with car insurance last summer, so I got certified as a Nursing Assistant and got a job 3 days after completing the CNA program. I got very lucky with that, however I've really been struggling financially since mid December.

Faux- Are you in college?

Yew did. >w< But I changed back, lol. Well, kinda. I added more to it. ^_^ I'm really liking the event bundles. *nod nod*

And do you mind if I ask why you're without a job for a year more? Oh, and how long are you gonna be in Japan for?

Gotcha. ^_~

So what all colors are you sporting Ginger? Is that a lot of Coral I see?

Angel Spirit Girl 03-08-2014 06:35 PM

I hope you can find a job soon, Fauxreal. <3

Nursing is a good choice of career, Ginger.

Ginger 03-08-2014 06:59 PM

Kilal - Yes! I've finally bought new commons and decided to buy them in my new favorite color, Coral. I love all of the different options with it. I'm also using Sky and Pink. Next color I buy will be Faded.

Angel - I thought so too, but it's been hard getting the hours I need to pay for the basics in life. This profession has also been hard on my back. I use proper body mechanics but sometimes there are circumstances where a person is laying awkwardly and their bed doesn't raise, so I'm having to bend over quite a bit to re-position them.

Angel Spirit Girl 03-08-2014 08:54 PM

I stand all day on my feet at a conveyor belt picking up cookies, and that is rather hard on your back, too.
