Long said nothing as he started steering Rosen back to the infirmary; they had been gone long enough.
And true to his word, Rosen started slipping back inward so by the time they were at the infirmary his eyes were blank.
So Long quietly transferred Rosen to his bed before going back to his own and staring at the ceiling once again.
Rosen didn't speak again.
-- James was being bustled to and fro as people prepared for the first show. He kept Yue close to him, still feeling insecure. Raven eventually found Wolfe with Frei. It seemed that Frei had been stricken down with one of her severe fevers. Laurel stayed close to Nic at all times, worried about running into James. |
Yue stayed close for support, but she slowly pulled herself away bit by bit as she tried to build his confidence back up.
Raven did what he could for Wolfe and Frei, and he was managing the hectic schedule well. Nic took precautions to keep James and Laurel apart, but kept the means mostly to himself. |
James complained at first but soon got swept up in the show.
Bren eventually went to find Fin, all dressed up in her costume. |
Yue let James get swept up. And then she went back to her research.
-- Fin had found a quiet corner to read. He glanced up as Bren approached. "... Hey," he told her. |
Bren smiled but she seemed a little worried, "Frei's sick," she told him quietly.
Fin frowned. "What?" he asked.
"She has a fever," Bren explained quietly as she squatted in front of him, "I have to go on stage soon but I wanted to make sure you knew."
Fin paused before nodding. "Thanks," he told her before putting the tablet away. He started off in search of Frei before turning back to Bren, "You'll do great," he told her.
Bren looked a little nervous but she smiled and nodded.
Frei was on Wolfe and Raven's juttle. She was laying in a pod with a high fever and a bit delusional. Wolfe blinked as Fin walked in, surprised to see him but not openly hostile. |
Fin was half-peaking in, surprised Wolfe wasn't being hostile. He stayed there for awhile before walking in a little more. "... Will she be okay?" he asked quietly.
Wolfe nodded a little. After a moment it became clear that he was rather worn out. "She hasn't had an attack this bad in a long time," he said quietly, stroking Frei's cheek softly.
Fin was silent for a long time before asking, "... Is there anything I can do?"
Wolfe seemed reluctant to reply but after a long moment he sighed, admitting defeat. "I believe she's missed you," he stated. Frei was frowning in whatever dreamworld she was trapped in. She twitched, moving her fingers.
Fin swallowed a little. He was afraid of Wolfe and terrified that him choosing to take some space had caused this. His feet remained firmly planted.
Wolfe watched Fin for a moment before shaking his head, "You did not cause this, boy," he said quietly, "She knew forming an attachment to you might bring this about. I think... it's time you learned the truth about Frei's condition," he told Fin, gesturing to a chair by Fin.
Fin swallowed again before slowly walking over to the chair and sitting down.
"Frei... Evelyn Frei is the product of brain experimentation. You've undoubtably seen her do feats that seem unimaginable to us. The changes in her brain allow her mind to use sixty percent of it's full capacity while ours can only use ten. No one can fully understand or relate to her, Fin," Wolfe explained quietly.
"She thinks and reasons differently than the rest of us but that does not mean she does not have emotions. In fact, her emotions are much stronger than ours. So much stronger that I've had to train her to control them. If she doesn't, if she lets them run loose, she overwhelms herself and gets fevers and migraines. You've experienced this too, I presume. She can get delusional; when her mind overworks itself she starts to see things that are not there." He sighed heavily, "The reason... I was so wary of your interest in her was not only me being protective of her. I wasn't sure... I'm still not sure... if she can handle such heavy emotions. Or if you can handle her. She's starting to really like you and this is the product," Wolfe stated, pushing some of her hair out of her eyes. |
Fin was dumbstruck. It wasn't clear if he had absorbed all of it or any of it. After a little while his hands started to shake. Wolfe was wrong; it was all his fault.
Wolfe grunted a little as he stood and walked over to Fin. He crouched down in front of him, "Seraphim," he said solemnly, "It's not your fault."
Fin wouldn't meet Wolfe's eyes. Even if it wasn't, he didn't have a clue what to do.
"Seraphim," Wolfe continued quietly, "Knowing this, do your feelings for Frei remain?"
Fin was quiet for awhile, sorting through his thoughts. "Would it be better if they didn't?" he asked quietly.
"I don't know," Wolfe admitted honestly, "there is the chance that your feelings could help her, but there is always the risk that these reactions will keep escalating." Wolfe glances back at Frei who was shifting again, "The choice is yours."
Fin was starting to get stressed out, not taking this lightly. He couldn't arrive at a decision yet.
Wolfe put a hand on Fin's shoulder, "Take some time to think it over," he consoled, "Frei's recovering but she'll be out for a few more days."
Fin flinched a little as Wolfe touched him, but remained silent.
Wolfe sighed a little, "You can discuss this with Raven, he'll provide council for you." Raven was better at this sort of thing...
Fin stayed where he was for a long time before nodding a little and moving to stand.
Wolfe nodded back and went back to Frei.
Fin paused, watching Frei and Wolfe for a short while before leaving.
Just as he got to the door, Frei muttered Fin's name.
Fin stopped, but he didn't look back.
Wolfe didn't say anything, still comforting a feverish Frei.
After another moment, Fin kept walking out.
When the concert was over, James immediately went to find Yue.
A happy and adrenaline pumped Bren looked for Fin. |
Yue was waiting back stage for James by costume and makeup. She had watched it all from backstage.
Fin was difficult to find. He had found a very isolated spot to think. |
So James swept her up in his arms and spun her around for a bit before kissing her. He seemed most like the old James when he was a rockstar.
Bren eventually gave up and went to chat with her girlfriends. |
