Nic still didn't say anything, waiting for Snow to continue.
"I need you to find Kale," she explained.
Nic still didn't say anything.
"Come to the command center after your run and I'll explain the details," she stated before dropping away from him.
Nic made a few other stops after his run before finally making his way to the command center.
Snow was waiting at a touch screen, she seemed deeply engaged in something.
Nic waited for her to be done with whatever she was doing.
Snow finally shut off the screen, "The problem is," she said, getting straight to the point, "that we have no idea where he is." She glanced at the map, "It's been abnormally long since the last time he checked in so my guess is that he's holed up somewhere with information but not able to send it back for some reason. Normally I'd get Wolfe involved but he's got too much on his plate as it is."
Nic paused before nodding a little.
"We don't have much of a place for you to start either. Kale tends to drift all over. I can show you the area where he's supposed to be searching but there's no guarantee that he was ever there," she explained before zooming in on the map.
Nic took all the information Snow was able to give him and asked all the right questions. It seemed like he had some experience with something of this nature in the past. When he was done talking to Snow, he went to find Laurel.
Laurel was in the dance studio but she wasn't exactly dancing. It looked like she was practicing her fighting moves, incorporating her dancing skills into it. She was getting fairly good.
Nic waited for her to notice him.
It took Laurel awhile. She was very focused, her eyes flashing a little more blue than usual. But finally she caught a glimpse of him in the mirror smiled, "Oh! Hey!" she welcomed him as she went over to greet him with a kiss.
Nic kissed her lightly back. As usual, he got to the point. "I'm going to look for Kale," he told her.
Laurel blinked, "Huh?" she asked, a little blindsided, "Kale?"
Nic nodded, giving her a few more quick details about the situation.
"... How long will you be gone?" Laurel asked quietly.
"I don't know," Nic replied.
Laurel was starting to fidget a little, "Can I... come too?" she asked.
"It's a one person job," Nic explained.
It looked like Laurel was trying to hold something in. As usual, it didn't quite work and some of her fear made it through. "... right..." she whispered, taking in a slightly shuttering breath, "Safe trip then." She forced a little smile.
"... I will need a few hours to prepare," Nic replied. "Do you still want to have lunch together?"
Laurel hesitated before nodding slightly.
Nic nodded a little back before turning to leave.
Laurel paused, "What time?" she asked his back.
"Usual," Nic replied without turning around.
So at the usual time, Laurel stepped into Nic's room.
Nic was there like usual. It looked like he was mostly ready to take off.
Laurel was acting strangely but it was hard to pinpoint exactly what it was. She barely touched the food as she stared at it the entire time.
Nic's appetite was the same as always. And like usual, he didn't speak unless he was spoken to.
There wasn't much speaking at this lunch. When Nic was done Laurel suddenly cleared her throat a little, "Do... you think secrets are as bad as lies?" she asked quietly.
"Depends," Nic replied.
Laurel was silent for a long moment, "On what?" she whispered.
Nic thought about it for a moment before deciding, "How guilty you feel keeping the secret."
Laurel froze for a moment before glancing off to the side.
Nic said nothing, expression blank and eyes non-judgmental.
Laurel was silent for a good while before whispering, "How do you keep so many s-secrets, Nic?" she asked quietly, her voice stammering a little despite her efforts to keep it firm.
"... I feel no guilt," he explained.
Laurel frowned a little before swallowing, "How?"
