It's not, really. Less than a thousand lines of code is still on the order of a quick hack. :P

For example, in ascending order:

The map generator for an upcoming Trisphee game that I'm working on currently weighs in at 2106 lines of code.

The QxtWeb library that the phase three backend uses internally is 6633 lines of code all by itself, and that's not even counting the support code that *it* relies on.

There's somewhere around 10,000 lines of code involved in what makes Trisphee "Trisphee" and not just a generic vBulletin, not counting the forum theme layout and vBulletin configuration, and also not counting the backends for the Taskal War event and the Choose Your Own Adventure event.

And as for the vBulletin foundation Trisphee is built on? Around 220,000 lines of code. (I will admit: I am of the opinion that vBulletin's codebase may be a bit bloated.)

Edit: On the other end of the spectrum... Gravity Runner (see my signature) is only 479 lines of code, and it would be shorter if it weren't for the touchscreen controls.

Tohopekaliga 08-22-2014 07:51 PM

I am of the opinion that the number of lines of code does not necessarily imply the amount of work that went into it. Especially as the numbers get bigger.

At my job, recently, I spent an entire week working on a bug.

The total lines modified? I deleted one line in one file and... added that exact line to a different file. BAM. Week's worth of work: accomplished.

Coda 08-22-2014 08:08 PM

Oh, certainly so. But it is sort of an indication of the complexity of the software in question. Having built less than 800 lines for phase three, I can say that it really doesn't do all that much. :P

Tohopekaliga 08-22-2014 08:14 PM

This is a fair point. Lines of code definitely imply complexity.

I have no idea how many lines of code are in the project I work on, but I'm sure it's at least 100k.

Tiva 08-22-2014 08:25 PM

…Wow…. that is kind of scary.

Coda 08-22-2014 08:35 PM

I work for Google. The repo surely contains MILLIONS of lines. I don't know if anyone has an exact number.

Tohopekaliga 08-22-2014 09:59 PM

Video games & Google tend to have a lot of lines of code, yeah. XD

Alpha 08-22-2014 10:49 PM

Totally understand, but still...there's insanity in some things for sure.

Sabrehagen 08-23-2014 07:25 AM

Thankies, Lucid and Espy.
I rather like this necklace design and am so unfamiliar with the shops, didn't realize there were pieces in other shops xD

Dralis 08-23-2014 11:05 AM

-Rolls through and tackles Sabre seating herself in his lap.- Mew~

Lawtan 08-23-2014 12:33 PM

*Observes the goings-on and takes notes*

Sabrehagen 08-23-2014 01:59 PM

-pleads to Law- Save me from the evil wiles of the Dralis~

Lawtan 08-23-2014 02:05 PM

Dralis is evil? But I thought you liked evil, Sabrehagen...

Dralis 08-23-2014 03:51 PM

-wiggles around a bit in Sabre's lap and gets comfy ignoring his pleas for help-

Sabrehagen 08-23-2014 04:01 PM

Well I uh... I do, but she's good in evil's clothing! >_>;;

Stop your wiggling, woman, especially when all you do is tease~

Dralis 08-23-2014 04:16 PM

-wiggles more just to torture him- This is untrue, don't be speaking lies about me. -stares up at him innocently-

Lawtan 08-23-2014 05:39 PM

Sounds more like evil in good's clothing...
Dralis, would you like a closed dimension for you and Sabrehagen?

Horror Babe 09-13-2014 09:53 PM

Ginger 09-22-2014 09:55 PM

Thanks! :) It took longer than it should have to make, honestly...

Yeladim 10-30-2014 12:45 PM

This is like the hangout thread I run over at Uni, only we don't have to keep track of our post count.

And why don't we have an actual counter? I'm not sure I want to be a mutant (but I do like the smiley face)

Espy 10-30-2014 12:47 PM

An actual counter?

Yeladim 10-30-2014 12:51 PM

Yea. So there is already a counter because everyone has titles based, I'm guessing, on how many posts they have made. So an actual counter would show that number of posts.

Or, if everyone likes the titles, which really are fun, the counter could show only on our individual page.

And sort of on this topic, is there anywhere that shows how many posts you need for the different titles? I've poked around but couldn't find anything. (But then I have very weak search-fu)

trystan830 10-30-2014 01:02 PM

actually, yeladim, the post count is on our profiles. but i'd love to see a list of the titles and number of posts. some of the titles amuse me lots.

apparently, i'm a "Barrel of Monkeys"

oh, and while i'm thinking about it, is there a hang-out here on Tris for NaNoWriMo writers?

Yeladim 10-30-2014 01:05 PM

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. Rather fitting seeing you have that title. Thanks tryst.

And you should start that NoNoWr thread if you don't see one.

trystan830 10-30-2014 02:14 PM

LOL!

hmmm.... i ought to ask. Lawtan, Espy, another long-time Tris member - where in the forum would i search for a NaNo hang-out?

Witchchylde 10-30-2014 02:14 PM

I have had a couple of weird dreams this past week that are sticking with me -- maybe my subconscious is trying to get me inspired to try NaNoWriMo for once?

trystan830 10-30-2014 02:17 PM

@Yeladim - i found one! it's over here: Creative Corner > Writers' Diary > NaNoWriMo anyone?

@Witchchylde - it's how my NaNos came about in 2011, 2012, and 2013. i had a dream that could be a "NaNo dream" over the summer sometime, and i wrote down a little paragraph about it, but decided to go with something else, which is based on a line i wrote in my 2013 NaNo.

i say go for it! =) i'm trystan on nanowrimo.org.

Yeladim 10-30-2014 04:15 PM

So I'm not going to NaNo again this year. I just don't have the time and I'd be luck to write 10k words. No chance at 50k.

trystan830 10-30-2014 04:22 PM

i have this year's set up as five little somewhat related stories - 10k for each one. let's see how well i do. =)

It'd be in the Writer's forum. I see you've already found it, though that thread's two years old. You can start a new thread if you want.

trystan830 10-30-2014 05:00 PM

found it, poked the sleeping thread, and maybe it'll stir things up?

Coda 10-30-2014 07:10 PM

I haven't done NaNo since 2003 ^^() I succeeded in 2002, failed in '03, and haven't tried since.
