Raven blinked at Frei. It had been awhile since she had so blatantly acted her age.
Frei went out the door and Wolfe stood with a small sigh before following after her.
Raven paused before following after them. Maybe a little ice cream would help cheer him up.
Frei seemed to know the best ice cream place around. She was already ordering a bit ice cream.
Raven looked around quietly at all the flavors before ordering one of the more obscure flavors.
Wolfe ordered Vanilla.
Raven wasn't too surprised by his choice. But once he got the ice cream and watched Frei enjoy hers a little, he started to slowly become himself again.
Frei got two scoops, cookie dough and bubblegum. She seemed to be enjoying it. Wolfe got his in a cup with a spoon, much less messy.
Raven's was in a messy waffle cone, but he was keeping it fairly clean. After they had grabbed plenty of napkins and were on their way out, Raven noted with a nod, "Though it's hard not helping, I'm glad I chose being here with you guys than with... Long?"
Raven paused as something, or rather someone seemed to catch his attention. He was wearing dark clothing that covered most of his body which sort of made him stick out at this time of day. It wasn't entirely clear whether he was Long or not, but the man certainly appeared to be Long's height and body type as he disappeared around the corner. |
Wolfe watched the guy before looking at Frei. Frei caught his eye for a moment before dropping her cone and disappearing into the crowd. It wasn't long before she got within sight of the Long look-alike.
Raven tried to catch the cone without much success. He sighed a little as he watched her disappear. "... What if it is him?" he asked Wolfe quietly.
The man had some sort of destination in mind. To the average eye, he was walking normally, but Frei could tell he had a slight limp. A bit of a rowdy group bumped into him, and it took him a little too long to right himself. And as he started his normal pace again Frei got a quick look at him. It looked like he was Long. And it looked like he had been injured in some way. |
Wolfe shrugged before turning to Raven, "Stay here," and vanished into the crowd himself.
Frei kept his eye on Long for now. |
So Raven sighed and cleaned up Frei's ice cream before someone slipped on it before finding a bench to sit on.
Long still didn't seem to be aware of Frei as he kept walking. |
Frei nodded to no one in particular. Wolfe was in position and peered around for any other possible threats.
There didn't appear to be anyone of threat in the area. But there were still a few people milling about.
A tiny dart shot out straight for Long's neck just at Frei grabbed his hand.
Long glanced down at the little girl blinking at her, a little confused. Then his other hand slowly went up to the scarf around his neck and felt the dart penetrating through it.
"Uncle!" Frei cried in an innocent, pleading voice, as she tugged on his arm "Uncle, you're hurt!"
Long could feel the dart dissolving in his fingers. |
Long didn't say anything as his other hand started clutching at the air where the dart was. As he looked at Frei, he seemed to understand. He didn't say anything as he let his hand fall to his side.
"Uncle?" Frei asked, eyes that of a scared young girl. She didn't have a trace of the usual Frei in her at all, "Uncle, are you alright?" Her grip on his hand tightened.
Long didn't say anything as the effects of the dart started to overcome his senses. But before he lost his senses he started to lean backward so he wouldn't land on Frei. And so he collapsed unconscious to the ground without a word or a fight.
As Long collapsed Frei let out a very real scream of terror, grabbing onto his body and falling with him.
That drew the attention of the people around them. Some of them ran over to see what was going on. Someone started calling an ambulance, one tried to console Frei, and another checked to see if Long was breathing.
Long was breathing, but just enough to stay alive. Frei was in tears and frantically shaking Long's body.
Wolfe's voice murmured through Raven's earpiece, "Go back inside the ice cream shop and strike up a conversation with the workers," he told Raven in a stern but calm voice. |
Raven sighed a little, but did as he was told.
When the bystander knew Long was breathing, he loosened the scarf to check his pulse. But he paused and cussed a little. There was some nasty bruising on Long's neck. But he check Long's pulse carefully anyway. |
Frei was still crying when the ambulance showed up a few minutes later. A dressed up Wolfe as a paramedic suit (which probably would ((fail)) have given Raven a nose bleed) got the stretcher from the back and ran to Long. "What happened?" he asked a bystander.
Someone explained that he had just collapsed. The one who had checked him explained he was breathing and he had a pulse before showing him Long's neck, thinking that might have something to do with it. The dart defiantly hadn't caused that bruising. It was more like the remnants of a sloppy strangling from at least a few hours ago.
Wolfe took it all in before thanking the bystanders, reassuring them and Frei that Long would be alright and moving him into the vehicle. Frei was still hysterical.
About thirty minutes later, Wolfe entered the ice cream shop and looked around for Raven. |
Raven was still chatting with the staff, targeting a chatty girl on her lunch break. They were discussing moisturizers as Wolfe walked in.
"I said chat not flirt," Wolfe's growl filled Raven's ear.
"Discussing moisturizers is serious stuff," Raven explained.
The girl he was chatting with nodded in agreement. "Are you Raven's boyfriend?" she asked Wolfe, winking an approval at Raven. |
Wolfe raised an eyebrow before bowing slightly to the girl and grabbing Raven's arm, dragging him away.
Raven and the girl waved goodbye before walking beside Wolfe.
"We've got him," Wolfe explained once they were walking away, "He should wake soon."
Raven didn't seem too surprised, but it wasn't clear how he felt about this. And it didn't look like he was going to share his opinion anytime soon.
When Long was taken to the hospital and most of his clothes were removed, it looked like his neck wasn't the only part of his body that had taken a beating. Most of his body appeared to be covered in bruises and a few long cuts. Some of them were older and some of them were a few hours old. There were also gashes around both of his wrists that looked like they had come from being tied up. It was a wonder he had gotten out of bed at all. But there was no immediate explanation for the limp. His legs were also bruised, but they wouldn't have caused a man like Long to limp. |
They came to an older part of one of the older hospitals. Wolfe ushered him inside. There was no one around, only a screen. On it was Long and Frei. Long passed out on a bed with some IVs hooked up to him and Frei at his side.
Wolfe had taken a look at his body and given him medication, applying antibiotics and bruising balm where needed and bandaging open wounds. |
Raven swallowed a bit, looking a little pale. He didn't stare at the screen too long, turning away after a moment.
Wolfe looked at Raven, "I need you to look after Frei," he explained, "Right now, she's not Frei, she's Eve. She won't know who you are. I was going to use her to interrogate Long but I've changed my mind."
Raven looked a little out of it, but he nodded his head.
"Try to keep her as calm as possible," Wolfe repeated before heading into the room. It took a lot of talking before Frei would leave Long's side. Even more for her to leave the room. "Eve, this is Raven," Wolfe said calmly, "He's going to stay with you while I take care of your Uncle." Eve looked at Raven with large, teary eyes.
