cautiously he nodded and when the bucket was over the rim he crouched down to pick it up off of the planks that kept the mud and plants from encroaching on the hole. "we can only hope." offering no more than that he carried the water back to the porch where he once more took to removing his boots
(he will be quiet but he will offer smiles when prompted and be agreeable. he will try to be discreet in checking brady out though if they scrub together over the bucket XD he hasn't seen anyone else in a long time but that is no reason to pull a james) |
He followed after the boy, already pulling off his hat and working out the leather strap that held his hair back, and as the locks fell free he could already feel them tickle against his heavy stubble. He did not linger in removing his muddy boots or stripping away his shirt before he told the boy where to fetch the other buckets for the water. Heading into the house to locate his diminishing bar of soap and his razor, he could hear the boy divvying the water like he was asked. As he stepped back out onto the porch he handed his folding razor to the boy as he dipped the soap into one of the buckets, working it into a lather against one of his hands before rubbing it against his face. He offered the soap in exchange for the blade
nodding he took the bar though he could not help but smell it first. it was good tallow soap and grinning he rubbed it along his jaw, adding a little water as he went until it was slathered well enough and turned so he could removed his shirt without risking the bucket perched on the edge of the stool under the glass mirror nailed to the porch column. "you are a good man brady, i am quite grateful for this"
He was careful not to move was he slid the blade across the curve of his cheekbone and down the soft flesh of his cheek as he watched the stubble disappear. He spoke as he flicked the soap and bits of stubble over the railing, "I have enough people who are kind to me, I figure I ought'a give it back somewhere," Lifting his head he worked along the line of his jaw next, "'sides, yew help me and I help yew, we both get the work done and everythin' is a bit better." A flick of his wrist and another quick brush down his other cheek left him nearly done, and he offered a nod of his head towards the boy as he worked over his chin, "'sides, you're barely more than a lad, yew need someone ta help ya out that early"
he shrugged his shoulders and took up the bar again so that he could wash the grime of the last month off. "try not to ever get taken' advantage of that is all i ask. some people out there are no good at all." when he was lathered he scooped up a little water and started removing the soap in patches
He was careful not to speak as he brought the razor down across his neck, not willing to tempt talking for the danger of the blade, and after a few strokes he could feel his face clean-shaven. He smiled to himself as he looked into the mirror admiring his fresh look. "Nah, I ain't the person to do sommat like that," He commented as he turned around to see he boy rinsing himself. Gesturing to the razor he placed it into the railing beside his shirt to let him know where it was before he started to strip free his dirty work jeans, "Lest yew think you are doing more work for less in exchange, then that's all your thinking." Giving a chuckle to himself he reached for the soap
he had nothing to say to the man's humor though as he reached for the razor he caught a good look out of the corner of his eye. he was honestly surprised at the body underneath the worn fabric though looking back at the razor to keep from cutting himself or knocking it over he let himself be swayed with the assurance that after so long anything on two legs would look appealing. taking the razor he moved to get a look in the mirror so as not to miss anything, either the razor or his host
He'd never been much of a self-conscious person, and the situation did not differ while the both of them bathed. He lathered the soap to wipe away that weeks amount of grime and dirt, and did not linger much before it was promptly rinsed away. Every so often he allowed for his sights to flicker up to make sure the boy was being careful as he shaved before he let his eyes linger back down the exposed torso before they were brought his sights back to himself to allow the new boy his privacy as best as he was willing to manage.
if he hadn't been watching as closely as he had then he wouldn't have noticed how many times he was looked at and though he chalked some of it up to wanton expectation he was certain that at least a couple times the eyes lingered. when he was done he rubbed the edge of it slack against his pants to get off most of the soap before dipping it in a clean bucket. he had nothing to dry it with and so left it open. without turning around he went to unbuckle his belt and slip out of his pants all while keeping his eyes trained on the other. if he was right he'd have a second reason to stay and if not at least it would dispel the suspicion, as he watched the eyes flickered back and forth like a nervous dog though each time they lingered a little longer. stepping free he turned around in time for them to dart away and moved so that he was close enough to reach but not so close he couldn't step away should he be met with aggression. "there aren't too many daughters anymore are there? even the roughshod houses wouldn't give their girls up but for the idea of prospect. you have a house and land though. why is there no missus brady?"
He knew he'd been caught, but avoided the gaze anyway, looking off towards his little sproutlings out in the fields. He did not feel inclined to say much, not feeling confident about sharing much with the boy, but as a hand reached out to touch at his arm he looked back up to look at him and give a shrug. "Ne'er had much inclination for a missus"
he knew the look well and read it better than the words. "there are other options in the world. it isn't such an uncommon thing and only wives and clergymen ever have anything to say against it. i don't see either only earth and sky and a farmhouse." he paused to let the man take in the advice before he made an offer. "....i am grateful for the bed since all i have earned is my meals"
The offer was less subtle than he would have hoped for, and he made himself look away as the idea rolled around in his head. The actual possibility never entered his head, and here the boy was proposing it without a second thought, and it startled him a bit. "Tha' don't seem like much of anythin' tha' could be taken as payment," he said quietly as he finally brought his eyes back around to the boy
if he did not know better he would have thought the man was being coy but if he knew anything it was the sound of a virgin. he tried a different tactic, "if it isn't enough i understand." he waited, "tha's not what I meant, gabriel." the man sounded worried and he purposely shied his head away and softly rounded his shoulder. brady would not be swayed by trade then, "then i'd offer it freely... i am a man too not a child y'know"
"I couldn't say I did know, ya don't look tha' old." He watched as the shoulder began to turn away, giving the boy a softer angle. His eyes flickered between the boy's face and the rest of him while a silence long enough to be mistaken as rejection lingered between them, and finally he spoke up. "It feels like it is a yes 'er no decision, and I dun understand why yew'd offer sommat like tha' ta someone out in ta middle of farmland"
he knew the answer as soon as the man asked though he did not grin as he spoke and kept his voice soft. "i am lonely brady.... and i trust you not to do me wrong. you are a kind person"
He'd known the boy less than a full day and yet the words were little more than truth. Afterall, he found himself saying only moments prior that he would not take advantage of the boy. He gave a partially committal shrug as his eyes fluttered down to the washbasin. "I dunno what I am suppos'd to dew here"
"set the soap to the side i guess and fetch up another bucket of water. i will wash out our clothes so they can dry and you an' i can wash afterwards. i did this before once and if you will be gentle with me i can show you how to do it right." he expected a question but when it did not come and still as naked as the day he was born brady left the porch with another empty bucket in hand. he assumed from the silence the other needed a moment to come to terms with this willful abdication of virginity. he smiled to himself and began to scrub
(he will have brady put a bit of lard on his junk or else take a little in his own hand and lead the man up to his little room(anything else is too expensive or not an option at this time), if brady did his own rubbing they go straight to bed with mine walking backwards and pulling him on top or if mine has the lard yours gets a hj and then the same but no doing the naughty unless you set up a thread in ix and link it there) |

he was pleased all through their bath and through dinner as well. at the end of the meal the farmer finally grew to difficult to ignore and asking what was was wrong was asked why he was so happy, pausing he shook his head, "three days ago i was sad, hungry, lonely and had no idea if i would be able to manage a roof to cover my head. right now i am full and happy and i have found a friend. this may only be temporary but i will enjoy what i have for as long as i have it"
Par usual the boy finished quickly enough, and collecting the dishes from the old table , Farmer Brown carried them to the sink to give them a quick rinse with the remaining clean water from their bath that evening. "Sound right enough," he let the bit of water drip from the bowl before he set it to the counter, "I am glad I am able ta help ya so much, you seem like a good enough lad."
his good mood fell a little at the admission, he was hardly 'good' or a 'boy' and he realized he felt guilty that this man, who had so far shown him nothing of what he saw elsewhere, saw him as either. he frowned. "brady," the farmer turned and under the eyes he fell. he could not do it. "...thankyou for dinner"
"Of course. With last nights's rain, tomorra will be full of work so you need your energy if we hope ta get any of it done," He nodded approval to himself as he reached over the counter for a dry towel to dry the dishes. "Before ya go to bed make sure to pray we get some more rain, 'cause if we do the crop this year might be saved," pausing for a moment be offered a grunt of disapproval, "Or I 'spose sayin' it would curse our luck but it's wortha chance."
"well it rained once, i am sure if you give it time it will rain again but if'n you like i will pray extra hard before i go to sleep ok?" he was given a nod and silently went upstairs. as he laid in the narrow bed and the smell of love-making and earth met his nose his resolve hardened. he couldn't tell the farmer the truth but he could save the man's crops
He was awoken in the night by the sound of rain pittering against the side of the house. It'd been thought to be something else, but a brief inspection clearly showed the unexpected showers falling fairly hard. He'd gone back to bed with hopeful thoughts and woke with a smile the following morning with the knowing that the crop could be saved if prayers continued to be answered as they were. Clothes were dressed promptly, and still smiling he walked down the hall to knock on the boy's door.
as soon as his eyes opened his stomach turned and badly wanted to stay very still until the knocking stopped he could go back to sleep, there was however no chance of that and girding himself he rose shakily to his feet to follow the beck of the farmer
He'd been about to speak out of his excitement of the rain as the door swung open, but as he saw the boy looking rough and shaky. Narrowing his eyebrows he gave a look of concern, "Are you okay?"
he tried to nod an affirmation but as he tilted his head back up the world tipped sharply and he had to grab the door-frame to stay upright. "...y-yeah, i'm fine"
He'd reached forward to grab at the boy when he was on the verge of falling, and his hands found the thin torso as he'd been able to steady himself with the use of the doorway. "No you're not, let go of the door and you will lay back down."
he allowed himself to be ushered back to the bed but he dragged brady down with him when he was laid down, "don't send me off brady, i can still work. it isn't hardly anything at all"
As the hands pulled him down he gently pulled the hands off of him as one would do with a needy child. He layed them back across the chest as he leaned in to press a kiss to Gabriel's nose, "I'm not gonna to send away, but I am gonna make you rest for today. You have to stay in here and in bed, you are too shaky to go walking around"
he wasn't the least bit happy with that though the farmer had a point. he felt like he was going to vomit up his liver already though he could not help but feel if by laying here he was jeopardizing any chance of staying. he had to hold back a frown. "i will work twice as hard tomorrow brady"
He offered a half-smile and a nod to the boy in an effort to calm his qualms about being kicked out while he held his own in knowing that he was the one to work the boy hard enough to get him sick. He went to leave and work on the rain soaked fields
when he woke it was evening and he could hear something creaking from outside of the open window. following his ears he carefully went downstairs, at some point in his sleep the pain in his gut and head had dimmed to ignorable levels though in it's place an empty belly and ache in his lowers had taken residence. when he got to the bottom he headed for the open front door and slipping past the creaky screen found brady in a rocker fiddling with something he could not see. "......you should get some oil, everything seems to squeak here"
He looked up out of surprise to see Gabriel standing there and an amused smile found him, "It's true, every time I manage ta get into town I always seem ta forget." Twisting the head of the rake against its handle to try and get it to stick to no avail. "I suppose I should probably get a new rake, this one has lived a hard life."
