Fin seemed a little sad, but he nodded and smiled a little. "Yeah," he replied.
-- After another moment Nic blinked and glanced around. "... Who was in here?" he asked as if he had just noticed. |
Frei held a finger to her lips, their secret.
-- Laurel blinked, "Oh, Frei's new friend. His name is Fin and he..." she paused, realizing that saying what she thought of his eyes would sound rather dumb. |
Fin nodded a little, blushing very slightly.
-- Nic frowned a little. Just how many kids did Kale pick up? |
Frei watching him closely for a moment before se suddenly turned to leave.
-- Laurel finally sighed and finished her thought, "And he...reminds me of you. As odd as that sounds..." she murmured, "Something in his eyes... is similar." |
"... You wanna stay longer?" Fin blurted out.
-- Nic's frown deepened. He was sure Wolfe would have kept the boy contained for now instead of letting him run around the resort. He sighed as he thought through how to go about explaining this. |
Frei turned and blinked.
-- "I think Frei brought him... I still don't understand why they were in your room though," Laurel noted. |
"... Like, hangout some more in the Juttle," Fin tried to explain nervously.
-- After another moment or two, Nic explained, "I was just running some analyses on his DNA." |
Frei didn't appear to know what he meant by 'hangout.'
-- Laurel looked a bit flabbergasted, "On Fin?" she clarified. |
"... Uh... There are lots of books to read," Fin offered.
-- Nic nodded his head. |
Frei looked at the screen.
-- Laurel frowned, "Why?" she asked, wondering what about the boy's DNA could have interested Nic so much. |
Fin let Frei look, hoping she'd find something she was interested in.
-- "... There's a 97% chance we share the same father," Nic explained. |
Frei looked for awhile before pointing to a book on motorcycles. She flicked her finger and the book filled the large screen. "Read this one," she told Fin, turning to him.
-- Laurel chuckled, "Sure," she replied sarcastically as she shook her head. |
Fin glanced at it before looking back at Frei. "... Out loud?" he asked.
-- Nic thought about showing Laurel the results, but figured it might go a little over her head. So he waited for it to sink in. |
Frei blinked, tilting her head slightly in confusion before beginning to recite something. The more she spoke the more it sounded like... a book on motorcycles.
-- Laurel was still smiling as she noticed Nic looked serious. She mouth dropped open slightly, "... wait..." she whispered, "... seriously?" |
Fin blinked, glancing between Frei and the book she had brought up.
-- Nic nodded, expression still the same. |
Eventually Frei stopped talking, it seemed like she'd finished a chapter from memory. Then she stared at Fin.
-- Laurel looked overwhelmed, "You... have another brother?" she whispered. |
At this point, Fin was just starting at Frei in awe. After a few moments, he seemed to come out of it a little. "... How do you do that?" he asked.
-- "... Half," Nic corrected. |
Frei blinked, a little confused at the question.
-- Laurel rubbed her temple a little, "So... your dad had... another wife?" she asked, still trying to process it all. |
So Fin just shook his head. "... You're amazing," he told her.
-- Nic shrugged. |
That seemed to make Frei a little more confused. She flicked her finger a few times until an image of a specific style of motorcycle appeared on the screen. She pointed at it and looked at Fin, "Cat's."
-- Laurel shook her head a little in disbelief, "... Why is he suddenly here?" she asked quietly. |
"He has a motorcycle?" Fin asked after a moment as he looked at the screen.
-- "Bad luck," Nic explained. "He compromised Kale's mission." |
Frei nodded.
-- Laurel swallowed a little before looking up at Nic, "How do you feel about this?" she asked. |
The motorcycle didn't seem to keep Fin's interest for long. "... Do you memorize books?" he asked her suddenly.
-- Even for Laurel, Nic was being particularly hard to read. But he shrugged. In the end, it didn't seem to matter too much to him. |
"... Memorize?" Frei asked.
-- Laurel nodded, "Isn't it... a good thing?" she asked, watching him closely. |
"Or do you have one of those photographic memories?" Fin asked.
-- "Good?" Nic asked, a little confused at the question. |
Frei blinked again.
-- Laurel paused, "Aren't you... happy to find a brother?" she asked. |
Fin waited to see if she was going to say anything.
-- "... He's a stranger to me," Nic replied simply. |
Frei seemed to be trying to reply and explain but her face scrunched up a bit. It was too hard for her so she remained silent.
-- Laurel nodded, "I know... but you're still connected." |
So Fin shrugged it off for now. "Do you like motorcycles?" he asked.
-- Nic looked like he disagreed. |
Frei paused before nodding. She flicked her finger again and a newer model came up. Once that looked a bit more like a hovercraft.
-- "He probably doesn't have family, like you, Nic," Laurel continued gently, "This is a good opportunity for both of you." |
"That's cool," Fin replied. "Do you want one of those?"
-- "... No, it isn't," Nic replied. "That boy shouldn't be dragged into our lives just because we were fathered by the same man. He doesn't have to live a cursed life." |
Frei shrugged a little. "Which do you like?" she asked.
-- "That may be so," Laurel admitted, "... but he's here now. And he obviously wants to meet you, Nic. He came to your room." |
"Uh..." Fin said. "I don't really know too much about motorcycles," he explained. "But I think this one looks better."
-- Nic sighed a little. "I don't have time to babysit," he replied. "Sending him on his way would probably be best for all of us." |
Frei nodded, "Faster."
-- Laurel sighed, "He's seen most of us now... Wolfe can't just 'send him on his way' anymore." |
Fin paused before nodding.
-- "He hasn't been here long," Nic replied. "I'm sure Wolfe has the means to erase his short term memory." |
"Ride?" she asked, eyes glinting a little.
-- Laurel paused, "Would you force him to go against his own will, Nic?" she asked softly. |
"... Ride?" Fin asked, confused.
-- "If he knew everything and had half a brain, he wouldn't stay," Nic replied simply. |
"Want to?" Frei asked.
-- "He has a major crush on Frei already," Laurel stated, "And I vaguely remember someone staying with me in my RV because of a crush though that someone really should have left..." she teased a little, putting a hand on her chin in mock deep thought. |
Fin blinked. "... I can't drive," he replied.
-- "... Frei?" Nic repeated, not believing it. "Wolfe will eat him alive, if Frei doesn't first," he noted. "It would be kinder to wipe his memory of us." |
Frei blinked, "... I do," she stated.
-- Laurel looked up at Nic, "But it's not for you to decide what is kinder for him," she remind him. |
