Fin started banging on the door, demanding to be let out and cussing at Wolfe. Raven let the frown he had been holding in come out. He shook his head a little, feeling bad for the kid. But what else were they supposed to do with him?
"... Should we tell Nic?" Raven asked, not sure what to do. |
Wolfe seemed to be thinking about that. Finally, with a sigh, he shook his head, "Not yet. Laurel's still fighting through her dehydration." He paused before deciding, "Once she's recovered, we'll tell him... Maybe tell them both at the same time."
Raven paused before nodding a bit.
Wolfe shook his head a little, "I doubt he'll believe us until he sees Seraphim," he murmured to Raven, "I hardly believe it myself."
"... They don't really look that similar," Raven noted. "... I wonder if they'll look more similar once he finishes growing."
Wolfe shrugged, "With the ability to make genetic changes, siblings don't necessarily look alike anymore," he noted.
"... He doesn't look like his mother could afford much," Raven noted.
Wolfe shrugged, "Neither couldn't Nic's. Gave him more freckles is all. And the difference of one parent is huge."
Raven nodded, a little lost in thought.
In the morning, Laurel woke slowly, blinking groggily around the room.
The room smelled like coffee. Nic was sitting beside her with his tablet out. It looked like he had showered and changed.
Laurel yawned a little as she turned to him, "That smells good..." she commented before trying to sit up.
Nic let Laurel try as he quietly finished something on his laptop.
Laurel took a little sip and sighed, "I'm hungry," she decided, "How long have I been out?"
Nic put down his tablet and took the coffee from Laurel. "Almost a day," he explained.
Laurel shook her head a little, "Everything's kinda fuzzy..." she frowned a little.
"Don't worry about it," he told her.
Laurel sighed again as she slowly swung her legs over the side of the bed, her frown deepened. "I'm so weak," she complained a little, shifting.
Nic blinked, wondering why she was surprised.
Laurel was pouting, "It's your fault!" she declared, "You always make me so helpless..."
"... You didn't take care of yourself," Nic countered calmly.
"Because I was so consumed by your actions! Like usual!" Laurel retorted, pointing a finger at him.
"What should I have done different?" Nic countered nonchalantly before taking a sip of coffee.
"You should have told me the truth earlier!" she replied hotly.
"And what should I have said exactly?" he replied, still calm.
Laurel opened her mouth, "You should have...!" but then closed it as she thought about it. She seemed to realize that she wouldn't have believed anything he told her when she was so angry. So instead she changed the subject, "Since when do you meditate?" she huffed.
Nic let Laurel change the subject. "I haven't," he replied.
That threw Laurel off for a moment, "That was your first time meditating?" she clarified.
Nic shook his head. "I learned in the Yin Long," he clarified. "But I haven't done it since I left until the other day."
Laurel frowned a little, "Why did you suddenly do it again?" she asked.
"To explore my mind," Nic replied simply as he sipped some more coffee.
That made Laurel a little nervous, "Are you... sure that's a good idea?" she asked quietly.
"There's nothing else," Nic replied, as if that was the only option open to him.
Laurel definitely looked worried as she slowly stood. She took a step forward and stumbled a bit, catching herself on Nic's shoulder.
Nic didn't say anything as he let Laurel use his shoulder to support herself.
Laurel fiddled with a piece of hair by Nic's ear, "Just... don't get lost in there, alright?" she whispered.
Nic nodded.
Laurel paused for a moment before bending down and kissing his cheek, "I'm going to go make something to eat," Laurel decided, "You want something?"
Nic shook his head. "I ate," he told her.
Laurel nodded a little, "I love you," she whispered in his ear before pushing off of him a little and slowly turning towards the door.
