I will have to try and read the story if there is actually something that ties in with the event. The only part I knew that went with the event directly was that the other shop keepers wanted to take the squirrel boy on a trip to see the bio-dome habitat. I guess the pet event items are the animals from the habitat, and these are the eggs they hatch from.
