"... There's nothing for me to say," Raven replied blankly.
Dan was quiet for a long time before glancing over at Laurel. "... You love your father," she said to Laurel. It wasn't clear if it was a statement or question. Blaze didn't say anything, but she didn't seem to mind not knowing any sports. |
Bee sighed, "... It's worse than we thought." she admitted, "But we need to think of plan. It's not hopeless." she stated firmly.
It wasn't clear if Laurel heard Dan. Then after a long moment she nodded a little, "He loves me." she barely whispered back. "I like soccer." Kale stated, "It would be fun to play a bit but no one plays with me here." he pouted a little as he licked some sugar off his finger. |
Raven said nothing.
Dan nodded a little. Then after a pause nearly as long as the one Laurel had given her she replied quietly, "... He hurts you, and you let him... He loves you, and you love him... I... I always did whatever my father asked of me, and he always gave me whatever I wanted... But I have never loved him, and he has never loved me." She let out a deep sigh, like it was a weight she couldn't get off her chest. But she didn't seem sad. Just contemplative. She had no regrets concerning the matter. "... Which one is that one?" Blaze asked before finishing off her vegetables. |
Bee looked at the ground as they continued to walk, "Raven... should we... contact Nic?" she suddenly asked.
Laurel didn't respond as she continued to stare the table. "You kick a checkered ball around." Kale explained. |
Raven started to shake his head, but paused as he stopped walking. He let out a sigh. "... No," he confirmed after a few seconds.
Dan didn't say anything either as she kept eating the snacks Laurel had brought out for them. Blaze paused a moment before nodding. She seemed to remember which sport soccer was now. |
Bee nodded slowly as well, "Do you think we can handle her without him? He'd probably pull her out of this the fastest... if... he didn't lose it himself." she added grudgingly.
Laurel finally stood up and grabbed a pitcher, refilling Dan's water glass. Old habits die hard. Kale slowly smirked, "Hey!" he exclaimed, "Wanna watch a video of me playing?" he asked. |
"... There isn't anything I can do," Raven whispered before he kept walking.
"Thanks," Dan muttered before taking another drink of water. After a few more minutes she asked quietly, but confidently," ... Is there anything I get you?" Blaze blinked. "Uh..." She glanced away for a moment, not doing a good job of keeping several emotions off of her face. She really didn't seem like she wanted to, but she also seemed to feel guilty. "... Sure," she replied. |
Bee frowned before catching Raven's arm, "What do you mean?" she asked quickly.
Laurel shook her head slightly as she returned to her seat and pressed the ice pack to her cheek. Kale laughed a bit, "We don't have to." he reassured her as another chuckle escaped. |
Raven shook Bee's arm off gently. "There isn't anything I can do," he repeated.
Dan was silent for a while longer. "... How about do?" she tried. "No," Blaze replied, "I'd like to." It wasn't a complete lie. She was trying to do something Kale wanted to do even though she thought it'd probably be boring. |
Bee's frown grew, "What? You're just going to give up just like that?!" she demanded, grabbing his arm again.
Laurel stared at the table, "Draw." she finally replied quietly. Kale chuckled, "Alright then." and stood. |
"I can't give up if there's nothing I can do," Raven replied a little angrily. "I have no right to interfere in any of this. I thought I would, but I just don't."
"... What?" Dan asked. And so Blaze cleaned up before following Kale. |
"You're friends with Laurel, right? You care about her, right?" Bee demanded, "She's hurting and you're just going to walk away?!" her eyes flashed a little.
Laurel didn't repeat herself. |
"And how much more will she hurt when we rip her away from her father?" Raven demanded. "Stopping this will help her physically but it will crush her in every other way. When he beat her, there was love in her eyes, not fear. None of us have any right to stop her from doing this out of love. Regardless of how any of us might feel about it."
Dan sat there for a long time, watching Laurel. Then she slowly stood. "Alright..." she replied. Then suddenly she reached out her hand to Laurel. |
Bee's eyes were filled with a cold fury, "That's right. Her eyes are filled with love when he knocks her to the ground. She'll take whatever he dishes out without a word." she agreed before pausing, "She'd DIE for him Raven!" she suddenly shouted, "How much farther are you going to let this go?! The stronger he gets the harder he'll lash out! He could kill her!" She took in a sharp breath, "You are a fool. I don't care what they say, I'm calling Nic." and with that she turned sharply and started to storm off.
Laurel didn't react or look up. |
Raven watched Bee for a moment before slowly continuing with his walk.
After a few more moments Dan told Laurel, "Give me your hand." |
Bee, still furious, went back to the Juttle and called Nic.
Laurel still didn't move. |
Nic didn't pick up.
"Please," Dan said gently. |
Bee kept calling, she wasn't going to give up any time soon.
Laurel was still for another long moment before slowly lifting up a limp hand. |
After a many attempts and a few minutes later, Bee finally got through. Only audio. "Hello~" said a sweet girl's voice. "How can I help you?"
Dan gave Laurel a small smile. "I'll draw while you take a nap," she told Laurel. "I'll draw while you sleep and wake you up right away if something happens. I'll sing you to sleep for your father, since he can't right now." |
Bee blinked, "Where the hell is Nic?" she said, clearly in a foul mood.
Laurel slowly allowed herself to be led by Dan. She didn't seem to be giving any resistance. |
"Oh..." replied the girl, dropping the sweet tone. "Well... he's gone right now. He left his tablet, so after ringing for ten minutes I decided to answer it. I'm not sure if I'll be able to find him, but I can try. Who is it, and how urgent is it? He'll probably be back in two or three more hours."
So Dan figured out where Laurel's room was and tried to get her in bed. She had clearly never done this before, but she was trying. |
Bee paused then nodded to herself. There was no other way. "It's Bee and tell him to call me back immediately, it's about his girl."
Laurel sat down on her bed but didn't lay down. She seemed to be in a different world as she stared at the floor. |
"... Alright," the girl replied. "I'll tell him as soon as I can."
Dan tried to get Laurel to lay down. |
Bee hung up.
Eventually Laurel did, though she remained very stiff. |
And so Dan sighed a little, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "... Don't tell anyone about this... alright?" she told Laurel, not expecting a reply. After a few more minutes, she had chosen a song. She cleared her throat a little before beginning to sing softly. There was a stark contrast between her typical voice and her singing voice. This certainly wasn't her first time; the tone was perfect and voice angelic. With a voice like hers, she could probably stand proudly next to James in concert. Yet, Laurel had never hear her sing before now.
And so, she sang soothing songs about love and hope. The longer she sang, the more comfortable she seemed to become as she let some of her own emotions pour into the songs. |
Laurel's eyes remained open for awhile but slowly they started to droop. "Baba..." she whispered, "loves... to paint."
|
Dan didn't comment. But she was content to sing until Laurel fell asleep.
|
Finally Laurel did fall into a light, restless kind of doze. But it was a start.
|
So Dan finished up her song before quietly leaving the room. She went to the door frame of Laurel's father's room and sat down before taking out her tablet and drawing in silence.
|
Bee remained in the Juttle. She wouldn't move until Nic called back.
Kale brought Blaze to a small room and started up the wall screen. He began to sort through the files before smirking again and looking back at Blaze, "Or perhaps... you want to watch Wolfe actually fight?" he asked with a mischievous look in his eyes, "I recorded it myself." |
The hours passed. After four hours had passed, there was still no reply.
Blaze shrugged. She didn't seem particularly interested in that either. |
Bee drummed her finger and finally started up her relentless calling once more.
|
No one ever answered.
|
Bee cussed the blank screen out before kicking the chair across the room. Then she paused and seemed to get an idea. She grabbed a medical kit and ran straight to the room with Laurel's father. "Where's Laurel?" she asked Dan.
|
"Shhh," Dan told Bee. "She's sleeping."
|
"Good." Bee stated as she took something out of the medical kit and went to find Laurel. Her eyes seemed... a little off.
|
Dan blinked, watching Bee for a moment before getting up and following after her.
|
Dan walked in just as Bee put something over Laurel's mouth. Instantly, Laurel fell into a much deeper sleep. A moment later Bee picked her up.
|
Dan blinked and then her eyes widened as she realized what was going on. "What are you doing?!" she demanded loudly as she walked up to Bee.
|
"We're leaving." Bee stated evenly as she shoved past Dan.
