Well, you can equip bows and certain staves/rods that let you atk with basic elemental spells each round w/o using MP. And bows do considerable dmg.

Pf. think of it this way. the death of a thousand paper cuts is probably more gruelling. xD

Psh so white mages have more melee potential. XD
Which they should, black mages have more attack spell potential. XD

Yeah, I've been griping about that for long enough. I'll see what I can do about that. And armor. And weapons that aren't in horribly wacky colors. And fantasy stuff in general. And robes.
